Bank of America doesn't support Quicken file update

I have existing accounts with Bank of America. I have a checking account and 2 credit card accounts. I was able to download my checking account. I was unable to update the transactions in my credit card accounts. Instead it created 2 new credit card accounts, but only downloading the current month. I'm missing 7 months of transactions that I haven't download since January 2026. I went to Bank of America to download the transactions via quicken file, but Bank of America doesn't support that anymore. How do I get the transactions from the previous 7 months and why did it create 2 new credit card accounts. I want to add the transactions to my previous existing credit card accounts. The account numbers of the credit cards have not changed.

Please do TOOLS, Account List and tell us what's shown in the "Transaction Download", "Last Download" and "Financial Institution" columns for each of the 3 accounts.

Because there are a GREAT number of people here who download from BofA every day.

Addressing only the issue of getting older transactions.

What NotACPA has asked for is the start of getting one step update working which you want to do and do that first because then you'll know what historical data you need. You'll probably get 30-60-90 days of data but that's up to BofA.

One caveat: although I have checking/savings accounts with BofA, I do not have a credit card account.

With my checking/savings accounts I can download (this is not one step update) my account transactions in csv format. (You need to select "Microsoft Excel" for the format and it will be downloaded in csv format which can be read by Excel or OpenOffice Calc.) The time frame I can chose goes back several years. If that is true for credit cards, you can download your old data. However, there is virtually 0 probability that the csv files for your credit card accounts are in the format that can be imported into Quicken. (Yes you can import csv files into Quicken.) However, using Excel or Calc, you can reformat the files into the format acceptable to Quicken.

I have some experience doing that reformatting since the credit card I mostly use can't be connected for one step update. I have used Calc. If you can download the old files and you want to try reformatting for import into Quicken, I may be able to help you with that. You'll want to post some samples (modified with fake data - please, no real data) so I can get some idea of what has to be done.

If you need help finding the downloads for the account, I can help with that too. Or you can google it.

I have been using quicken for many years. I have downloaded transactions from Bank of america and other banks accounts for a long time. I haven't updated my transactions since December of 2025. Last month my Quicken account was renewed. I went to download my accounts but only received the last 2 months. I went into tools account list and transaction download. I don't see anything for Last download.

I did download the transaction into Microsoft Excel and saved as a csv file, entering the columns specified. When I went to import the data it said no transaction imported. Do you know how I can format the CSV file so it will be acceptable to quicken

One thing you might check, by looking at the file in a text editor, is whether Excel, in saving the CSV file, made the separator a semicolon rather than a comma, making the file unacceptable to Quicken. I ran into that issue on my first attempt to import a CSV file created/modified by OpenOffice Calc.

If that is the case, just change all semicolons to commas in the text editor and try again.

If that is not the case, please post a sample as text, with fake data, so I can take a look at it.

The hashtags in the date column are because the dates are more than 8 characters. I expanded the column to show the full date without the hashtags, but after saving the file it reverted back to the hashtags. So I changed the dates to all 8 characters and still the file wouldn't import

First: I use OpenOffice Calc. I have used Excel in the past but never with CSV file so I can't really speak to the message you are getting from Excel. Did you try clicking on Help? I will do some research to see what I can find out. Anybody out there know more about Excel? Also, I'd like to see what your sample file looks like as plain text.

This is what the sample file generated by Quicken looks like as text:

As to what I see in your sample there are a couple of issues:

You are missing the last 3 columns: tag, memo, and chknum. If you are missing any column, Quicken won't import anything. I do not remember whether Quicken says anything about why it did not import anything.
The account column needs to be filled in for each row with the name of the account as it appears in Quicken. Quicken will not import any row that does not have account column filled in. There will be no message from Quicken as to why those rows were not imported. It just gives you the number of rows imported and the number of rows not imported
My dates have always been in the format of mm/dd/yyyy. So, for example, 1/8/2026 would be 01/08/2026. The Quicken generated sample CSV file shows it that way as well. The CSV files that I have downloaded and rearranged into Quicken format have always had dates in that format. So we can definitely say that might be a problem.😉

@steffer5 your CSV file looks to be in the correct format.

The screen shot of the message is confirming that you want to save a CSV file from a workbook with multiple spreadsheets and that only the active sheet will be saved as a CSV file.

The date format is just fine. A CSV file ignores any formatting and will default to a simple format. The pound signs only means that the column is too narrow to show the full date. Just widen the column to see the date. A CSV file will always default to the same column width.

The account name needs to be exactly what the Quicken account name is. Otherwise, a duplicate account will be created. You should have gotten a message while trying to upload those transactions, asking what you want to do with those transactions from the credit card accounts that didn't match accounts on Quicken. Here is what Quicken Help indicates -

My experience has been that, without account name, Quicken simply does not import that row. What sceptic is showing is maybe what you get if there is an account name that does not exist in your data file. I think all you need to do is add account name to each row.

I made a mistake in one CSV file I created recently, putting account name in only the first row. It imported that row but simply did not import the others. There was no message with options. I have never misspelled an account name.

Bank of New york doesn't allow for OpenOffice Calc. It only lets you use Excel

That makes no sense to me. Do you work for Bank of New York and you are using a work computer and they don’t allow you to install OpenOffice Calc on it?

I think I may have figured out what you mean. When you try to download transactions, Bank of America labels the format something like Microsoft Excel but it is not really. It is really a CSV file which can be processed by either Excel or Calc.

The more important issue is: Have you been able to import your old transactions?
