Investment Performance Report

I'm amused at the implementation of this new report especially since I've been waiting for years for a performance report. I've never thought of displaying comparative investment performance as a series of vertical bars. Seems like something designed by a tech guy who has no experience with investments. I've always seen investment performance displayed visually over time and usually with a benchmark for comparison. For example, here is a single investment made into BKLN compared against a risk-free investment. Gemini easily created it based on a quicken download of my investment history and prices. Quicken has the data so should also be able to produce this for a single security, a single account, or all accounts. In my opinion this is infinitely more informative than what is currently implemented in Quicken.

What you're asking for is a graph to show investment performance over time. We already have this, somewhat, when you use the Portfolio Value & Cost Basis report. The new Investment Performance report is just trying to show total performance of investments by account or security or asset class or time period, not performance plotted over time.

I don't find the Investment Performance report particularly useful; I'd rather see a nice chart like the one you posted above. The Investment Performance report, to me, has a number of oddities that make it of limited usefulness. For instance, when I look by Asset Class this year, it shows I have a negative 55% IRR in Small Cap stocks; I had one small mutual fund investment of about $20,000 classified as small cap security, which was sold in January for about $19,000, for a loss of about $1,000 or 5%. But the way it calculates IRR over the 20-some days I held it at the beginning of this year, it shows a massive red negative performance which is completely irrelevant in the scope of my overall investments. Yet this stands out as the biggest feature on the graph. Or when I set the report to show performance by security, it tres and miserably fails to plot about 80 securities — in alphabetical order. The X axis shows the names of only 9 of the 80 securities — a pretty useless graph. To be more useful, it should show the graph by IRR (highest to lowest or visa versa), and probably show only 10-12 at a time, with a button or horizontal scroll to see more.

Thanks @Jacob. Feel free to have this changed to an idea or feature request, I'd be curious how many users are looking for this type of information.

Yes it is performance over time rather than a snapshot, but importantly it is total return not IRR. In my experience stock and bond investors only look at total return, private equity looks at IRR. Also the chart I put forward includes a benchmark because one is required to judge performance.

One other nit about the way the IPR is implemented. The screens where you can select accounts and securities includes every account and security ever used, which for me is many hundreds which makes it useless. I would think it sensible to offer a filter to only include accounts that are not hidden/closed and securities that have a live investment.
