Transferring Quicken Data from Mac to PC

I have Quicken Mac 7.4.2/MacOS 10.15.8 with 35.3MB of data. I saved a new file with the Investment accounts deleted and exported into a QXF file. I also saved a backup of that file (ext quickenbackup).

When I try to import into Quicken Windows I get a message "Import Failed". I was able to see an error log which stated all the accounts were established but the data was in the wrong format. Is there a way to convert the QXF file into a QDF format? Or a way to reformat the Mac data into a format Windows can recognize?

I have have spent hours on this using all the information on the internet and even used my sister's newer Mac to try to create readable files, but was unsuccessful. Will Quicken Support be able to help me convert the files?

@GGormally@cox.net the Quicken Support article that @Boatnmaniac is a good article to reference and use for troubleshooting. It outlines the standard process for converting a Quicken Mac file to Quicken Windows using a QXF export. From your description, however, it sounds like you have already completed those steps successfully and are encountering the failure during the Windows import stage.

Since the QXF file is being recognized and the import log indicates that the accounts are being created, the issue does not appear to be simply generating the export file. It sounds like the import process is failing when Quicken Windows attempts to process the account data and transactions.

I'm not aware of any supported method to manually convert a QXF file into a QDF file. The QXF import process is itself supposed to create the Windows data file. Likewise, I am not aware of a utility that can reformat the Mac data into another import format outside of Quicken's built-in conversion process.

Given that you've already:

Created a new Mac file with the investment accounts removed,
Generated a fresh QXF export,
Created a backup file,
Tested using another Mac, and
Reviewed the import log,

I think you've gone well beyond the typical user-level troubleshooting. At this point, Quicken Support would likely be your best option. They may be able to review the import logs in greater detail and determine whether the issue is caused by some data within the file or whether you've encountered a conversion problem that requires escalation.

If you do contact Support, I would recommend keeping a copy of both the QXF file and any import logs available, as those may help them identify exactly where the conversion is failing.

@GGormally@cox.net - I posted that Support Article link earlier because there are quite a few steps in the process and perhaps there is a step in that process that you might have missed when trying to import earlier. I do agree with @Sceptic that if you did indeed complete all of the steps spelled out in that Support Article then perhaps it would be best to contact Quicken Support for assistance.

Thanks for the quick responses and useful insight. I noticed when I tried to create a new file on the newer Mac (MacOS Monterey 12.7.6 7 Quicken Premier 8.5.2), I couldn't establish a new Quicken file from my QXF export from my Mac (OSCatalina 10.15.8). It set up all the accounts, but the balances were zero. And that was the log I saw/saved. I tried again today to see what I could export from the new Mac and exported a QMTF file (not recognized as a Quicken file when I open on my PC) and a CSV file, which let me export (supposedly) back to 1990, and saved as an Excel file. I also saved all the Logs (Export log, ConnLog, HTTPLog, ConsoleLog and QFXLog). So it appears the QXF export does not work. Perhaps Quicken Support can help me now that I have more information. I was hoping that there was an option to escalate the issue with Quicken Support. I have been using Quicken forever (data back to 1995), I would hope they could help me restore at least the last year of data…and I must not be the first person to experience this issue. @GGormally please report back after you work with Quicken Support on this issue. Since you have done extensive troubleshooting, it would be interesting to know what issue is preventing you from successfully completing a QXF import. It could be a benefit to others who may experience similar issues.

If you are able to create CSV transaction files, Quicken Windows does have the capability to import CSV files for both banking and investment transactions. Maybe when you are working with Quicken Support, you might want to mention that you have CSV files. If the QXF import hits a dead end, then maybe they can help you determine if the CSV files are a viable solution.

Sorry, I'm a QWin user and don't know a whole lot about QMac nor about the various MacOS platforms but I don't understand this. Are you saying that you created a QFX file with your MacOS Catalina QMac to set up a new QMac file in your MacOS Monterey QMac? Couldn't you let your QMac (MacOS Monterey) directly convert your QMac (MacOS Catalina) file? Or is there some reason why you must do this conversion using a QFX file that I don't understand?

I thought maybe my issues were because my Mac was so old (Mac OSCatalina 10.15.8). So I borrowed my sister's newer Mac (MacOS Monterey 12.7.6) to see if I could get Quicken files to use to upload into my new PC. So, I tried to use a QFX file to import into my sister's Mac and create a new Quicken file on her computer, but it only transferred the accounts with zero balances and no transactions. I had to use a Backup file to create a new Quicken file on the new Mac. I'm going to contact Quicken Support and see if they can help me transfer my historic Quicken data from my Mac to my new PC….Thanks!
