Regression (69.26):Backup Not Made When Upgrade via Help/Check for Updates

Upgraded from 69.26 to 69.53 by going to Help menu/Check for Updates and installing the offered update (69.53). Backup file in the format {filename}-{version}-{date}.QDF-backup was NOT made during the update.

This was broken in the past, fixed, now broken again. Thanks.

I'm curious. Are you looking where you expect to find the backup or did you search the whole drive for just the base part of the data file's name (no date, no extension)?

Every once in a while, a Quicken update will mess with the backup settings and put things where you don't expect to find them.

I also noticed this and mentioned it in another thread.

That thread reported that the number of scheduled backups retained changed from the number set in preferences. It appears the backup counter is reset to 0 after an update now. So, if you have it set to the default 5/5 setting, you will see new 5 backups retained before the oldest backup in the folder for the data file is deleted. This results in more than 5 being retained.

Hi, when backup during upgrade was working it saved in the same location as the regular rolling backups

I understand what it has done in the past, but I asked if you searched your computer for the backup.

While some Quicken updates appear to create a backup automatically, I am not aware of any Quicken documentation stating that a backup is guaranteed to be created before every program update. I think if a backup copy of the data file is going to be made prior to the update, it states it on the Release Notes window or the Successful Update window. Creating a manual backup before installing updates remains the safest practice.

I just updated to R69.53 and it stated on the window after the update that the data file was updated -

I checked the Quicken/BACKUP folder and the backup is there -

Interesting did you go through the Help/Check for Updates Path? And usually the version part of the backup file name is the version you are running prior to update (in case you need to roll back), and not the version you are upgrading to, strange it named it 69.53. I take a manual backup before every upgrade anyway but was curious if there is any rhyme or reason to if/when it creates a version backup (user-initiated vs auto etc.)

If a program update is made when it is offered when Quicken is first started, a backup will be made. If you do the update using the downloaded patch update, there will NOT be a backup made.

I'm guessing, because my firewall prevents the check for update program from running, that if you do it via Help/Check, it will make a backup, but I am not certain of that.

I'll repeat what I said earlier:

Every once in a while, a Quicken update will mess with the backup settings and put things where you don't expect to find them.

It might also change if the time and date are appended to the file's name.

I was prompted to update after an OSU. The strange this is that was I already upgraded to R69.53 a week ago or so but installed a manual patch to R69.53 on 10/9. Then, the first OSU after that I got the prompt to update to R69.53. That is probably why, the backup shows R69.53.

The question is, why was I prompted to update again, after manually updating to the same version?
