Missing ONLINE SERVICES tab on main Checking Account

I'm missing the Online Services tab on my main checking account. I have 6 other accounts with this provider that are connected and downloading correctly. I've tried adding new account and I've tried resetting online services with another account with this institution.

After performing an update the account is included in updates, but no transactions download and the online balance is a week behind, showing October 1, while all the other accounts with this institution show October 8.

I performed most recent update with no success either.

You can also see from the account list there is no "Yes" confirmation of transaction download, which I've circled. The account direct beneath (underlined) is with the same institution and confirms transaction download.

I've used Quicken for several years… 15+. Everything was working fine until last week. I did the most recent update, then none of the accounts were processing an online update. I reverted to version 69.29 and everything started working again, although that could be when this particular account quit downloading. I just updated to the lasted version this morning, before starting this thread, and that didn't improve anything, but at least the other accounts are downloading correctly after the update.

Should I "Deactivate" the other accounts with this institution and try to reestablish? My concern is that this checking account doesn't become deactivated, since there is no way for me to specifically deactivate this one account.

@Johnny Youts that is very unusual. I have never seen that happen before. You could try creating a new checking account and then moving all the transactions to that new account, but before you do that, here are some troubleshooting steps to try -

1. Validate the data file

Select File → Validate and Repair File.
Select Validate File.
Click OK and allow the process to complete.
Review any messages in the DATA_LOG.TXT file.

2. Refresh your Quicken sign-in

Select Edit → Preferences → Quicken ID & Cloud Accounts.
Click Sign in as a different user.
Type yes and click Sign Out.
Sign back in using the same Quicken ID.
Reopen the account and check whether the Online Services tab has returned.

You can reactivate the checking account without deactivating by using Tools→Add account instead of "Set up now" on the online Services tab. But, do these steps first before we try that.

You can but do the Data File Validate and Quicken ID Refresh first. Then we can try the Deactivate and Reactivate. There is a way to reactivate the Checking account without deactivating first.

I completed all the previous steps and after adding account, it just shows that all 7 accounts are "Already added to Quicken" with no success of gaining the ONLINE SERVICES tab. There is nothing in the Data_Log.TXT that is referencing the effected Checking Account.

@Johnny Youts please let us know what the results for these steps. The reason why I hesitate to just deactivate and reactivate is that there is no guarantee that that will bring back the Online services tab.

The other option is to create a new checking account, and move all transaction from the old checking account to the new one. The key of course is that the new account has the Online Services tab.

How do you move all transactions to a new account? Is this done 1 by 1 or can all be moved at once? Do you close the "old" account? Seems I would need to deactivate the original account regardless to integrate the new account. Maybe I should try to deactivate/reactivate first to see if that works, before starting an entirely new account and moving transactions over? Is there any other way to deactivate the one account without the Online Services tab?

What steps did you take? Did you do the Validate and the Quicken ID re-sign in?

Before you can move transactions, you need to confirm that you can add new checking accounts with the online services tab.

Open as an "Offline Account"?

@Johnny Youts - Here are some steps for the move process -

Step 1: Back Up Your Quicken File - VERY IMPORTANT

Before making any changes:

Select File → Copy or Backup File.
Select Create a complete backup.
Save the backup somewhere easy to find.

Step 2: Create a New Offline Checking Account (which you already have done)

Select Tools →Add Account.
At the bottom of the Add Account window, select Advanced Setup.
Select Checking.
Select I want to enter my transactions manually.
Click Next.
Give the account a temporary name, such as:
- Checking-New
Click Finish.

Step 3: Verify the New Account Has an Online Services Tab (which you already have done)

Open the new account register.
Press Ctrl+Shift+E or select the gear icon and choose Edit Account Details.
Verify that an Online Services tab is present.

If the Online Services tab is missing from the new account as well, stop here because the issue is likely broader than the original account.

Step 4: Move Transactions to the New Account

Before you move any transactions, delete the Opening Balance transaction created with the new checking account.
Open the old checking account.
Click in the register.
Select all transactions by clicking the first one, and then while holding the Shift key, click on the last one.
If you have a lot of transactions, you might want to move them in groups and highlight only a group of transactions at a time.
Right-click on any highlighted transaction.
Select Move Transactions.
Select the newly created checking account.
Confirm the move.
Important, if you get any pop-up messages, always click "Yes" or "OK".

Quicken will move the transactions, including reconciliation status.

Step 5: Verify the Move

Open the new checking account.
Confirm:
- Transaction count appears correct.
- Beginning balance looks correct.
- Current ending balance matches the old account.
- Reconciled transactions still show as reconciled (R).

Do not delete the old account yet.

Step 6: Activate Downloads for the New Account

Open the new checking account.
Select Account Details → Online Services.
Click Set Up Now.
Enter the financial institution credentials.
When Quicken displays the accounts found at the bank, carefully Link to the new checking account.

Important:

For the new checking account, choose Link to Existing Account and select the new checking account you just created.
Do not select Add for an account that already exists in Quicken.

If multiple accounts from that financial institution are downloaded, leave their existing links intact unless Quicken specifically requires relinking them.

Step 7: Run One Step Update

Run One Step Update.
Review any downloaded transactions.
Verify:
- Transactions download normally.
- No duplicate account was created.
- The Online Services tab remains available.

Step 8: Verify Reconciliation

Compare the Quicken balance to the current balance shown by the financial institution.
If the account was previously reconciled:
- Review a few older reconciled transactions.
- Verify they still show an R status.
Run a reconciliation if desired:
- Select Account Actions (gear) → Reconcile.
- Confirm the account reconciles without unexplained differences.

Step 9: Delete the Old Account

Only after confirming that:

Downloads work.
Balances are correct.
Transaction history is intact.
Reconciliation is correct.

Then:

Open the old checking account.
Select Edit Account Details.
Confirm there are no remaining transactions.
Select Delete Account.

If you have any questions or issues, please circle back. There are a lot of steps here, but it seems like the only way to get your checking account back in working order.

@Johnny Youts Another very important thing to mention. Depending on how many transactions you need to move, the process might take some time to complete. Let it finish, even when it seems like it stalled, it hasn't. If you have a lot of transactions, you might want to move them in groups rather than all at once.

@Johnny Youts I should have mentioned earlier, but another helpful tool when moving transactions is create a transaction report for the old checking account before you move transactions. This way you can verify transactions if needed after the move.

I think instead of trying to move all previous reconciled transactions, I'm just going to move the unreconciled transactions and close the old account (not delete) within Quicken. Then establish the new account with new unreconciled transactions. I'll rename the old account with the dates of all the reconciled transactions. I'll have to do some cleanup from there with recurring bills, pay checks, etc. What do you think?

I think that is an excellent idea since the Move feature in non-investment accounts has a major problem.

You will get this message for every reconciled transaction:

And even if you set all the transactions to Cleared in the register instead of Reconciled as has been suggested in the past Quicken also puts up the same warning for every transfer where there the other side of the transfer is reconciled.

It basically makes the move command pretty useless.

All the other accounts, including the old, closed checking are still showing linked when doing an online update. I've deactivated the other 6 accounts and will let things settle overnight and try to reactivate them all tomorrow.

In the past, when I've had to activate/reactivate an account, it'll download hundreds of previously reconciled transactions that must be deleted. Is there anyway to delete multiple transactions at one time or do you have to delete them 1-by-1? If can only be done 1-by-1, this is definitely something that needs to be improved upon.

I assume you are using the Downloaded Transactions tab?

I don't use it, but from what I understand they did add multiple select/delete to it not too long ago but that might not kick in for a new account connection (transactions going directly into the register).

If it doesn't then the best approach is to make sure that you can find all the duplicates in the register easily and delete them. This isn't hard if all your transactions are either uncleared or Reconciled since the downloaded ones will be marked cleared. From there you can just sort by the Clr column and the one marked with c would be the ones to delete (provide they didn't match an existing pre-entered transaction).

@Chris_QPW I have found that that is no longer an issue. As long as you respond to the pop-ups with "Yes" or "OK", you will have no issues. I have done the move transactions several times recently and they all performed perfectly.

Yes that is a good idea because the move process can take quite a while if you have a lot of transactions to move.

@Johnny Youts if you are having issues with the other accounts at the financial institution, then yes, it would be a good idea to deactivate ALL of the accounts at that FI, blank out the FI Name and Account Number on the General tab of Account Details. Then after all of the accounts are deactivated, use Tools→Add account, to reactivate the accounts, instead of "Set up now" on the Online Services tab.

@Johnny Youts any time you reestablish an account or accounts, you have a risk of duplicate transactions. What I have done is see what date ranges these duplicate transactions are for, and then in the account register, remove the "R" from those transactions in that date range, and then repost. That way you won't have duplicates to deal with after you post the transactions.

The other way, as @Chris_QPW mentioned, is to delete the duplicate transactions from the Download window. They have enhanced the options for that window where you can delete them in mass, and no longer need to delete them one-by-one. I don't use it often because there is a possibility of deleting a transaction that isn't a duplicate.

The other way you can deal with the duplicates that @Chris_QPW mentioned is what I also do if there are a lot of transactions in the download window, is to just post the transactions and delete them from the account register. I think for myself that it's the easiest way to deal with duplicates for the same reasons that Chris mentioned.

Is the problem checking account a linked cash account, i.e., linked to an online enabled brokerage account? If so, the Online Services tab will not show for the checking account.

Chris, I only get prompted once for Reconciled transactions. Otherwise I do get prompted for every transfer transaction.

From what I have seen, you now are only prompted once for Reconciled transactions. Maybe what you are being prompted for are the transfer transactions?

It is possible that is the case and I just didn't realize it.

And now that I look at the prompt I posted you are correct, it says it is a transfer.

Now that you reminded me, I do remember this discussion again. Without including transfers though, it really has the same problem.

What's more the prompt should be much more detailed on what transaction it is affecting, and the prompt should have been, "Do you want to do this for all future reconciled transactions?"

@Johnny Youts please see this very good point raised by @mshiggins.

If this account is actually a linked checking account associated with an investment account, then the missing Online Services tab may be normal behavior. In that case, online connectivity is managed through the investment account, and no corrective action may be necessary. I would verify whether the account is linked before proceeding with any troubleshooting.

It is not a linked account to an investment account. It is just a normal checking account.

I went ahead an tried to reintegrate all accounts with my financial institution. It is continuing to show integration with the original "old" checking that still does not have the ONLINE SERVICES tab, so I'm unable to get that account deactivated from my institution, not am I able to link it to the new checking account I made within Quicken. How to I sever this link?

Are you talking about Quicken shows it as activated of online services?

If so, where does this show in Quicken?

If you are referring to what it says at the financial institution, I have found that it doesn't matter, it will still allow reconnecting.

You have two options -

Go ahead and move all the transactions to a new checking account as we planned initially. Once that is done, you can then delete the old checking account. That will sever the connection. Once that is done, you can then reactivate the connection for the new checking account.
You can do a Quicken Copy of your data file. That will sever all connections in the copied data file. And then you can reactivate the connections for all accounts in the copied file.

Quicken Copy

Make a backup of your data file.
Open Quicken and select File → Copy or Backup File.
Select Create a copy or template and click Next.
Accept the default setting to copy all transactions (recommended).
Choose a location and enter a name for the new file.
Click Save Copy.
After the process completes, open the copied file.
Check to see if the Online Services tab for the old checking is there in copied data file.
If it is there, there is no need to create a new checking account. Just reactivate online services for all accounts.
If it is not there, then use the new checking account as your new ongoing account.
You then can decide if you want to move transactions from the old account to the new one, or close and keep the old one for historical transactions.

Since your issue is an unusual one, I think a Quicken Copy is a good idea.

A Quicken Copy creates a new version of your data file while rebuilding portions of Quicken's internal database structure. This process can help correct certain types of file corruption, data inconsistencies, and performance issues that may develop over time. Because the copy is built from the existing data rather than simply duplicating the file at the Windows level, it can sometimes resolve problems that Validate and Repair does not fully correct. As an added benefit, the newly created file may also be more efficient and responsive.

Created QUICKEN COPY and while it didn't restore the "Online Services" tab, it did break the download integration link for every single account that I had it connected for. Took sometime to reestablish all the online download authorizations, but I think I'm fully back up and running. Had to move forward with the new account register, but I think I've got worked out. Appreciate all your help. This one took a while.

As mentioned, there were several transactions that downloaded that were already reconciled, so I'm very thankful I was able to delete multiple unnecessary transactions at once, after they all downloaded. Solid improvement!!

I do have a new issue. When trying to download transactions, I get the following error. This happened before and I reverted back to 69.29 version, which fixed this issue. I'm concerned about doing this again, as this may have been when I lost the "Online Services" tab the first time around. Any fix for this issue?

@Johnny Youts I wouldn't worry about this issue, unless it happens repeatedly. I have this happen every once in a while. If you wish you can fill out the information for Quicken Support. They would appreciate the feedback.

The good thing is that you are now back up and running.

But again, I wouldn't worry about this one incident. But whenever an odd incident occurs, or Quicken doesn't seem quite right, you can always run a data file validate, or super validate, to be sure.

Click OK and allow the process to complete.
Review any messages in the DATA_LOG.TXT file.
