Hi everyone,
I am looking for suggestions on the best way to handle a corporate ESPP rescission (unwind) in Quicken Windows.
The Situation: Due to an ESPP plan qualification issue, Company X unwound/rescinded a purchase of 92.211006 shares across 23 specific lots in September 2026.
- Out-of-pocket cost basis (principal): $5,600.00
- Cash received: The $5,600.00 after-tax cost basis was returned to my bank account via ACH/payroll direct deposit.
- Tax/Income treatment: The $5,600.00 return of principal is 100% tax-free. (Statutory interest and tax adjustments were processed separately via payroll and 1099-INT/W-2 reporting).
The Quicken Challenge: I need to remove the 92.211006 shares from my Company X Brokerage Account and account for the $5,600.00 cash returning to my Savings account without generating artificial income or distorting reports:
- If I use RmvShrs in the brokerage register, it removes the share count cleanly but generates $0.00 cash. Categorizing the Savings deposit as an internal Transfer ([Company X Brokerage]) would drive the brokerage cash balance to -$5,600.00.
- If I use Sell at cost basis ($5,600.00), it generates the cash to balance the bank transfer, but this was technically a legal rescission/unwind rather than a market stock sale (no 1099-B will be issued).
- If I keep RmvShrs and record the deposit directly in my Savings register, Quicken forces every category to be an Income or Expense type, which labels a non-taxable return of principal as "Income" on cash-flow reports (or leaves it as Uncategorized).
How would experienced Quicken users structure this type of corporate unwind/rescission to keep both the brokerage share count and P&L/tax reports 100% clean?
Thanks for any insights!
