When I use the "Enter Transactions" on a brokerage account, put a number in the "Interest:" box, that amount does not end up in Categorized Report under "Interest Inc". How does one post interest to a brokerage and categorize it?
@Rascal when you run the category report make sure to include the brokerage account that you posted the interest to. Sometimes these reports exclude investment accounts by default. Go to the report customization and on the Accounts tab, click on "Select All", then rerun the report to see if the interest amount then shows.
Entering interest that way will get categorized as interest in reports. What specific report are you looking at? Is it an investment report or are you looking at a spending/budget report?
No dice. Brokerage account is checked, 2 IRAs (standard, Roth) are unchecked.
It is "INCOME TAX CATEGORIZED" that I have used for years… not sure if that was an included report or if I created it years ago.
The template is Reports > Spending > Itemized Categories, set date range to Last Year, Sort Account/Date
The investing income Categories _IntInc, _DivInc, etc. are hidden by default. When selecting the Categories for the report, make sure Show hidden Categories is checked and these Categories are included.
You may want to go to Tools > Category List and un-hide these Categories.
So under the tab at the top titled "Categories", the "Show (hidden categories)" was unchecked, checking that shows the _IntInc which sorts to bottom of the category listed, the underscore does it… i want that interest to show up under Interest Inc" but not sure how to make that happen.
Why would they be hidden to begin with?
I cant direct this interest to something other than "_IntInc" category it seems.
@Rascal Interest Inc is used for non-investment accounts, _IntInc is a specialized category used for investment accounts.
@Rascal I don't know why the investing income categories are hidden by default, but that has been the setting for as long as I have been using Quicken.
Those Categories and their associated tax line items are used for tax and investment reporting, so perhaps Quicken wanted to discourage users from using them for other transactions, or use other Categories for investment income. It is certainly confusing that they include "Div Income" and "Interest Inc" as standard Categories but as you have seen, those are included in the Spending reports but not the "underscore" Categories that are actually used for for investing income.
For me there has been no downside to un-hiding all the Categories that I use.
I am surprised the interest on an investment account needs to go some where other than where I want it to go, in my case _IntInc rather than Interest Inc>bankbrokeragename category.
Both types of Interest Income are needed for tax reporting
I'm not questioning why hidden categories are off or on by default… the above post explains my issue better.
care to eomment as to why i cant control where investment interest goes in the category structure?
@Rascal, If you want it to show up as a category you select you can put it in Miscellaneous and then pick whatever category you want:
That would work I think, but i guess i dont understand the whole _categories within Quicken Classic Windows, I am on 2013 version.
@Rascal if you want an investment account to use Interest Inc, you will need to post interest income differently in the investment accounts.
Instead of using the "Interest" box, you would need to use the miscellaneous category dropdown to select "Interest Inc". The interest amount needs to be entered in the Miscellaneous field before the dropdown list is available.
Edit: @bmciance our posts crossed - sorry.
what version of Quicken is this screencap taken from?
My 2013 QW does not have the checkbox Qualified next to Dividend input.
It is from the latest Windows Subscription R69.53.
That is a new feature in the latest version of Quicken. You wouldn't have it in Q2013.
That was introduced in R68.25 (June 2026) Windows Subscription.
how often is SubscriptionQW updated?
@Rascal If you use Categories other than the defaults that begin with underscores for your investment income, capital gains, etc., the income will not be included in the corresponding columns of the Investing > Portfolio views or in the Investing reports. Those reports are hard wired to use the default categories.
@Jim_Harman I am not sure that is entirely true. I use customized Income for Investment Accounts, and the income does show up on investment reports.
To test and verify -
There may be some reports that are restricted to the underscore categories. I think these are canned tax reports, if I remember correctly (Schedule B is one of them). I don't use the canned tax reports because they don't exist in Quicken Deluxe. I create my own tax reports and the custom income does show up in those reports.
Sorry, I should have said "some investing reports."
The Investment Income and Investment Transaction reports have Category customization tabs, so they will include whatever categories you have selected.
It looks like most other investing reports use the Tax line item that is assigned to the Category to determine the type of income - Interest, Dividend, or Other for example.
The Tax reports and Tax Planner also use the Tax line items.
In the Portfolio views, the Income column includes all income generated by the security,
