Downloaded Transactions are being Matched Incorrectly

Question

I have encountered an issue where transactions downloaded from any of my financial institutions tend to pair up with a scheduled transaction based only on the amount.  So if I have a scheduled transaction for ABC Credit Union in the amount of $200.00 and Quicken downloads a transaction that happens to be in the amount of $200.00 but in no way related to, or even close to, the name of ABC Credit Union, Quicken will automatically match those two.  How would I correct this?

To get started, I would like to determine the exact location of your Quicken data file and verify whether it is stored on a cloud service. Please follow the instructions in this support article to locate your data file in Finder.

Once you have located the file, press and hold the Option (Alt) key on your keyboard to display the file path, as shown in the attached screenshot.

Please share the file path with me so we can determine the location. Also, learning whether you back up to a cloud service would be helpful information. This information will help us determine the appropriate next steps.

When this happens, I do use the Reject Automatic Transaction Match to set it back.  Its getting a little old doing this because of how often it happens.  Renaming rules have not worked either.  But I am not sure how that applies in the scenario I outlined.  In my scenario, these are scheduled transactions that are being matched with something entirely different that is downloaded.  The only thing the same is the amount.  My latest one was a scheduled transaction for ABC Credit Union was matched to a downloaded transaction from Utah State Tax Commission.  I have checked the rules for both and there is nothing in the rules to match these together.

To add to @Jon's reply, you can proactively create renaming rules to prevent renaming of Payees when you run into it. You can set up a renaming rule that is "If Statement Name contains 'Walmart' Do Not Rename" or "If Statement Name contains 'Walmart' Set Payee Name to 'Walmart' ". That may prevent the downloaded transaction from being matched to a scheduled transaction with a name of ABC Credit Union. It might take a while to build up a small library of such renaming rules, but you don't need to try to create a lot of them at once.
