Attempts to change email fail with "Validation failed"

I want to change my email address for my account so I went to Account and Privacy settings, clicked on the pencil beside Email and provided the new email address and password. It won't accept the change, "Validation failed".

Can a moderator please help out getting this done. Thanks in advance.
