I am new to Quicken 2017 and I have set up a brokerage account. I need to link some type of inventory account that only keeps track of the holding information; shares purchased, dividends earned, change in market value, selling, etc.

Huh? That's what Quicken does. Are you using Windows or Mac Quicken?

I'm staying on Quicken 2013 Premier for Windows.

Windows.  I first set this "brokerage account" as a checking account because you could link it.  But the checking account does not show the cash value and the investment values separately.  I'm definitely doing something wrong.

    You're doing it wrong.

If it's an investment account, you need to select the appropriate account type: Brokerage, IRA, 401(k), etc.

If the brokerage is not US or Canadian or you wish to enter transactions manually without downloading information from the brokerage: During the Add Account process, when you are prompted to enter the name of the brokerage choose "Advanced Setup" at the bottom of the window instead and follow the remainder of the setup process.
This will give you an investment account register where you can enter all your security transactions.
