QUICKEN INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHANGING TICKER NO LONGER WORK.  THE SYMBOL BOX, UNDER EDIT SECURITY DETAILS, IS BLOCKED SO NO CHANGES MAY BE MADE.  PLEASE ADVISE HOW TO ENTER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
Instructions:
  1. Click the Investing tab.
  2. Click the Tools button, and choose Security List.
  3. Click the name of the security whose ticker symbol you want to change.
  4. Click Edit Security Details.
  5. In the Symbol field, delete the old ticker symbol and type the new one.
  6. Click OK.
    • image  What happens now?
Quicken prompts you as to whether you want to
keep the price history associated with the old ticker symbol, or delete the
history and start over. The recommended procedure is to keep the price
      history.
  7. When Quicken prompts you as to how you want to handle the price history,
select Copy quotes from [old ticker] to [new ticker].
I'm uing quicken 2017 latest update - one problem after another!!!

Is the security you are trying to change one that was created when you set up a 401k account in Quicken? These securities have "-401k" at the end of their name.

You may be able to handle changes to these securities with a Corporate acquisition or Mutual fund conversion transaction. As always, make sure to back up your Quicken file before making any changes

No, but thank you. Problem has been resolved. Something corrupted locking this securities Symbol box.  I believe that it had to do with the investment's downloaded negative value resulting from coincidental name change/stock spit.  SITUATION WAS CORRECTED BY:  Setting up new security to replace existing original and reassigning each transaction from the original investment to that of the newly set up investment.  The original investment, now with no transactions, was deleted and Quicken instructions were followed in the "new" old investment to establish new symbol. This took 2.5 hours to resolve. Not happy.

Did the security you were trying to change have the Type = Bond?

Since bonds do not (normally) have symbols, Quicken programmers opted to not allow bonds to have symbols; the field is grayed out.

The workaround to that is to reset the security type to something else, set or reset the ticker symbol, and then set the type back to Bond.

As far as I know, this limitation only applies to the Security Type of Bond.
