how to add a transaction to calendar ... getting senile

  Most likely you are trying to use the Calendar on the Bills tab.  That calendar isn't a "full calendar and as such doesn't have the full functionality which includes adding a transaction.

  
  

  Select "Show Full Calendar" to get the calendar you can add transactions to.

  Note you can also get to this calendar by putting calendar on the Home tab or by Tools -> Calendar (Ctrl+K)
