QDF: Validating your data and Security Comparison Mismatch

Gamal Mustafa
Gamal Mustafa Member ✭✭✭
After I validate or Super validate I keep getting the same error over and over. (see log file at the end)
I can't "Copy" or "Year-End-Copy". I will get a message that reads "File NOT copied".
I can't do a "File Export" to a "Quicken Transfer Format File", because it will ALWAYS crash the program.

Also one of the accounts will open a message window telling me that I have a "Security Comparison Mismatch" every time I do a one-step-update, of two stocks I don't have anymore. (Not sure if is related). Now, notice that the number of shares is negative. I have tried to "Create a placeholder transaction for the difference", but it does not seem to get recorded, so the next time I run one-step-update I will get the same "Security Comparison Mismatch" window.

Here is the Log of the last "Super validate".
Note: I don't have an account called "ACCT_14999"

Security Comparison mismatch -- Motorola went through a series of transactions in Jan, 2011 creating the two securities you are having an issue with.  Share counts in those transactions and in subsequent sales need to be consistent.  There are a variety of ways you could have entered those 2011 transactions including some transactions that might have stretched farther back in time.

Ok, I just went back to the last sell transaction for the 2 securities and clicked on the box to "sell all shares". Nothing really changed, but I did not get the "Security Comparison Mismatch"  window I usually get after do a one-step-update and accept the transactions. Thanks!

do you know how do I find where is that  "ACCT_14999"?
  • Gamal Mustafa
    Gamal Mustafa Member ✭✭✭
Hi q_lurker, yes the problem has been after I sold them. First when O sold Mot Mobility and the When I sold Mot Solution. I applied markus1957 solution and in the last update the window did not came up. I have to wait until there are new transactions to see if that actually solved.

That account is a corrupt ghost account. Unlikely, but sometimes they appear as [Categories] in the Category List. Less often, they show up under the links in the OSU summary screen; clicking gets you to the ghost account register where it can be deleted in Account Details.

You could try to back door into it by creating a transfer transaction into the account from a spending account. You do that by entering [ACCT_14999] including the brackets into the Category field.  Save the transaction, then right click on it; select Go to matching transfer. That should take you to the account register of the ghost account.  From there in upper right corner, use the gear icon to get to the Account Details window, where there is a button to Delete Account.

Adding- Until your file completes the Quicken Copy routine, it remains significantly corrupted to a level that future problems are almost certain.

Ok, I tried [ACCT_14999], [ACCT 14999], [14999] and it said "account does not exist"

I checked also for categories with similar name and nothing. I deleted unused categories anyway...

    what is the OSU?
  • Gamal Mustafa
    Gamal Mustafa Member ✭✭✭
OK. I think I found something. It now change from ACCT_14999 to ACCT_1499f.

If enter something with that category, it will allow it, however it is not a category in the list. If I try to create it as new, it will say "Duplicate category name. try another name".

I tried that... ACCT_1499f is a ghost category, not a an account.

if I try "[ACCT_1499f]", it will not find anything.... however if I try "ACCT_1499f" it will.

However ACCT_1499f is not in the Category List, is not even a hidden one, I cannot re-categorize or delete it.

and it make sense because the first message in validate is "Fixed damaged category.  Please check your category list by going to Tools>Category List."

however, when I check Category List, i don't see anything unordinary,

The brackets indicate an account; if you can't get to a register from a bracketed category, then it does not exist or can't be accessed.

Did you try the Copy routine in the link I provided?

    Your file is a mess.
  • Gamal Mustafa
    Gamal Mustafa Member ✭✭✭
Hi Markus, yes the Copy routine in the link worked. But I am still using the original file.

It ask me if I wanted to use the copy and I said no. Should I had say yes to that?

  • GeoffG
    GeoffG SuperUser ✭✭✭✭✭
Yes, you should use the copied file. Quicken rebuilds data tables when File Copy is used and can mitigate some data corrupted files. It may not solve all your issues, but is a step in the right direction.
  • markus1957
    markus1957 SuperUser, Windows Beta Beta
You should use the copy file after you validate and super-validate the Copy. It wouldn't hurt to run the regular Copy routine after the super-validate to verify the file tables don't have to use the "skip over junk" exception.

You are getting closer to having a usable file. Have you looked at category list, including hidden categories for anything that looks strange?

Look for that zero shares transaction and delete or edit it with correct information.

Regular Copy process now runs without stopping?

Continue to run Copy, validate, super-validate, choosing to use the copy each time until no errors post. Old style Buy/Cash is not an error.

Then, when error free, rename the last copy file with the name you want to use.  Use that file from now on.

Adding- turn off Cloud Sync in Preferences so it doesn't screw up the file.  Leave it off if you don't use it.  Otherwise wait to turn it back on until you see your file is behaving.

In the investment account register there is a "Find" icon in upper right.  Try that.

Adding- If your Category List is not too large, you might try clicking on every category to make sure they all open and don't contain gibberish characters in any of the fields.

I did a find on all 19 active investment accounts. searched for "exact 0 shares" found nothing.

My file have data since 1989... I have a 334 active categories (with items)....and a lot of entries... it would be hard going one by one...

I did a new copy. This time it went Ok. Without the need of Shift (should I do shift anyway?)

Ok. I tried "rebuild the category list" it added a bunch of categories, some of them similar o a name change of my original one... I fixed the rental categories to use the new terminology and format, thinking that could be it... that did not help...

the option was to "Create a new category similarly named to the category that is broken". However, I don't know the which one is broken to be able to do that.

Ran a validate. still the same error...

I think it may have something to do with rental...

I have never really used it features... But I decided to do a "View Rent Receipt" and it crashed. also there is a category with zero items that I cannot delete or change its group. Quicken had a group called Rental that no it change to Rental Property Expenses, but that category is there lingering. I cannot delete, change the group or change the tax line.

If it's the last item you have highlighted, that is an internal category that cannot be deleted (Quicken will disallow). Any category that begins with _ is internal and can be hidden if not needed.
