Why have I not been able to download the latest 5.17.4 update? I continually get an error message.

Thank you for reaching out on the community and telling us about your issue. It sounds like you've been trying to update the program for a bit. What is the extact message you're getting? Does it say anything about a specific problem or is it more of a general error? Either way if we're looking to update the program right now the easiest way would be to uninstall and reinstall the program.
The article here should help with uninstalling and reinstalling. Once we've done that we should be on the latest patch.
Once you get a chance let us know how it goes and if you're able to update properly!
