Usage field in Category List

Regarding Category List Ctrl+Shift+C

Does the USAGE field only show the count of categories used for the current year? How would you find the count for previous years? Reload a Q-File?
Could someone point me to some info on how this works?

    It gives the total usage.  There isn't any way to find it by year, but I would say if you need that kind of detail you should use a report instead.
