Placeholders for Stock Cost Basis

What is the best way to deal with placeholders for stock share cost basis? Should I use them to enter in the information in the placeholder or delete and use Add Shares?

    In theory you should be able to enter the information in the placeholder and it will then turn create the proper transaction(s).  But in practice what I have found it that it leaves empty placeholders around, so I delete placeholders and enter the proper transactions myself.

    Using Add Shares? Someone else pointed this out to me on another post but I want to validate that.

    Add Shares for when you don't have the full transaction history, and the actual transactions like Buy when you do.
