Can I assign a category to the net value of a split transaction?

I can assign categories to every line item in a split transaction but is it possible to assign a category to the final net amount?

    No — there's nothing to categorize. If you categorize every split line, they together comprise the net amount you paid. If you were able to (you're not) add a category to the net transaction, you'd be double-counting the income or expenses.
