What date to use for transactions?

I have always used the payroll date as the date for any 401k contributions. When I look at my 401k on the company's website, they often will have a date for the transaction prior to the payroll date. They receive the money early.

Which date should I use for the transaction in Quicken?

@statonre - curious why it matters?

for the 401k, if they receive the money earnly, just maintain the date of the payroll deposit; it's easier that way and has no bearing on the ROI in  any event

for the actual investments, leave the dates as it. You want the return on investmeents to use to date the money was actually invested.
