How to stop "Split" from automatically appearing in categories
I'm using Quicken Starter for Windows. Once I have used "split" in the category window it automatically defaults to split next time I enter a new transaction for that payee, so I have to cancel the split if I only have one item. How do I change the system to default to a single category all the time? Then I can choose to split if I want to

Go to the memorized payee list (Tools → Memorized Payee List or Ctl+T) and find that payee and edit it so that the split lines have been removed. And you probably should lock it so that it doesn't get changed.

Thanks for such a quick response. A real learning process, and time-consuming to fix everything, but it taught me a lot about the different things I can do within Quicken.
