Incorrect Payee identified

On 2 recent occasions one checking account's transactions involving a local gas station have downloaded with the Payee identified as L.L.Bean.  Memoried Payee List and Renaming Rules do not include the gas station or L.L. Bean.  The transactions are correctly identified on the bank's website. Where might the error originate?

It might help explain the situation if you told us what the payee name of the gas station really is, as shown on the credit card statement. I mean, if the gas station called itself "Bean Gas" … that could possibly send Quicken off on a wrong conclusion …

Most likely @QuickUserPSP's suggest about "Automatically apply Quicken's suggested name to payee" is the key.  With that on, if nothing changes the payee and it thinks it knows what it is, it will change the payee.  If you want leave that on, for other reason, then you want a renaming rule.  If your renaming rule is used the automatic one will not be applied.

As for where Quicken gets the names, someone said it was some kind of list on the server.

@QknConfused do you have "Automatically apply Quicken's suggested name to payee" check marked under Edit→Preferences→Downloaded Transactions?  If so, that might explain it.  I am not sure how Quicken determines the suggested payees, but maybe some can chime in to give an explanation, but I have a feeling that it is an internal mechanism.

The other thing it could be is if any time in the past, a transaction for the gas station was changed with a payee for L.L.Bean.  To confirm this, do a search in the "All Transactions" register, with both the "Payee" and "Downloaded Payee" columns showing.
