How did this wreck all my online connected accounts?

Today, I followed the Community advice below (from a Quicken rep) to the query 'Investments not updating investments'. But now every one of my online connected accounts is showing wildly inaccurate totals and the investments still haven't updated. Also, although I have backups for every earlier Quicken year I don't have one for this one. Anyone help?

Canada - Windows 10 - Quicken Classic Deluxe - VR54.17

I would recommend signing out and signing back into the Quicken program. To do this, please follow the steps below.

  1. Go to Edit > Preferences > Quicken ID & Cloud Accounts
  2. Click sign in as a different user
  3. Type "yes" to sign out
  4. Sign back in using your existing Quicken ID

Once this has been completed, please attempt to update once more and let us know the results.

We need considerable more information and details to help you with your issue because you have not clearly described the problem.

Let's begin with why you are on version 54.17 when the current version is R60.18?

Good question… I thought it was automatically updated

How can I better describe my problem?

Great. Next step is for you to explain your issue in considerable more detail and specificity. Please include mentioning the specific financial institutions involved and whether you are using Web Connect or Express Web Connect to download transactions. Or, is the issue getting security pricing updates, which is different?

Thank you - I appreciate your patience.

My initial issue was that mutual fund values were not updating through One-step Update. Checking around for advice I came across the comment listed in my first post (answer to another enquirer re 'Investments not updating'). Seemed like a simple and harmless start so I did as suggested. Once signed back in however, all my regular accounts that update through One-step have been altered with either new opening balances (I generally start a new QD file each january) and/or elimination of splits in transactions. Mortgage tracking is way off and although the value download for the investments (mutual funds) did not take place, there is now something wrong with the total - I have yet to explore this in any detail.

I have always backed up my QD files but this time somehow I have no back-up so am very stuck.

Sounds like there is a lot going on here.

For starters, I strongly recommend NOT starting new file each year. My file would contain 30 years of data had I not run into file corruption issues due to bugs in the Quicken software in a couple instances. My current file does date back to 2016 with NO archiving. It is a very large file, but this does NOT present an issue. In my view, you have a higher likelihood of running into issues if you archive or start new files annually.

There is an issue in Quicken where - for reasons that are unclear - it can change opening balances. I have had that happen a number of times and I've seen others have reported the issue to Quicken. It is maddening for sure, but easily fixed when you recognize the issue. In my experience, the altered opening balance issue tends to occur when the Quicken application is updated.

Let us know whether you would like help with a particular issue. For example, are you now getting the updated mutual fund prices? If not, post a fund code and I'll check it for you.

Thank you - I was not aware of issues with the annual file renewal. It looks as if Quicken has added random earlier transactions to each account along with a new Opening Balance. I have removed the extra transactions and adjusted the opening balance on a couple of accounts to bring them back to the correct total. I hope this will sort that element.

I would be really grateful for help with the following:

Where did my split transactions go (only totals remain)?

Mortgage accounts that no longer seem to link with the payment account

I don't seem to be getting updated MF values still. One of them is by Fidelity: FID231.

    Thanks again.

Starting with the MF values, I've had a few issues with MF pricing lately. I added the FID231 to my security list and ran an update. I didn't get a price for that fund. That being said, I've had a couple instances where prices don't come down until the next business day, so let's give it a day and see.

What do you mean by "Mortgage accounts that no longer seem to link with the payment account"?

Losing split transactions is typically a result of deleting an account. Have you deleted any accounts or created an archive?

Also, have you tried running a File Validation? If so, have you also run a Super Validation? These processes only work in a narrow range of situations; however, I'm asking the question because you are experiencing odd behaviour.

Do you have a backup file that does not exhibit these issues?

Do you have web/mobile turned ON or OFF?

Thanks for checking the MF price - happy to wait and see.

I have mortgages in a defined quicken accounts but only the full payment shows up on my register for the account where the money comes from: it is no longer split into Principal & Interest. The mortgage account register does not reference the paying account in Payment Details but lists the increasing interest payments. One of the mortgages has no register at all under payment details.

Earlier with a different mortgage (I have a few) I set up the account again and deleted the original. Don't know if that one is working or not - no payment since - it updated the balance OK but all of them seem to display the correct payment figures in the Loan Details.

I went through the validation and super-validation with a quicken online help person - no effect.

I do not have a back-up file for this - this is a surprise as I thought it was backing up automatically as it always has in the past.

    Mobile and web is ON.

I do have a backup file for 2023 and here the mortgages display as I would expect.

Personally, I don't trust mobile/web. If you don't really need it, turn it OFF. If you do need it, then so be it… it is supposed to work.

I didn't expect the validation processes to help, but it is a step in the process that shouldn't be ignored. It does, very occasionally, help.

The mortgage feature is finicky. I have a variable rate mortgage and it is not easy to reflect the interest rate changes in Quicken and have the payment plan update correctly. One thing you should absolutely avoid, is do NOT connect a Quicken mortgage to a bank mortgage using Express Web Connect. Leave Quicken mortgages unconnected to bank accounts. Only the account from which the payment is drawn can/should be a connected account (either using Web Connect or Express Web Connect).

It sounds like you will have to update/redo the Loan Details (select Edit Terms under Load Details) and then click on Edit Payment Details under Payment Details and recreate that. Again, just like the split transaction issue, it sounds like somehow an account was deleted, which could cause split transactions to be broken and converted to simple totals. Once you have recreated all the loan details, you should be able to pre-enter the next mortgage payment into the register and that should confirm whether you have fixed the split into principle and interest.

That is too old to be of any use. Recreate the mortgage loan and payment details instead.

Understood re the mortgages - only the accounts from which payments are drawn are connected online.

    Will redo the mortgages.
