How do I get pending transactions into the register?

Quicken Windows Subscription Member ✭✭

I want pending transactions to be entered into the register as uncleared transactions when I download transactions. How do I accomplish that?

They are not in the register and I have the preference set to add them.

You must set this preference for that:

Edit → Preferences → Downloaded transactions → Automatically add to banking registers

Which also implies that you will deal with all your downloaded transactions in the register and not in the Downloaded Transactions tab.

That's not how it works when you follow the recommended procedure for this mode.

When set for the transaction to go directly into the register the transactions are marked either New or New Match in the status column (blue dot column). You are then supposed to review them. Clicking on the New or New Match status allows you to mark them reviewed (New/New Match goes away). They will also be marked reviewed if you edit them or if you reconcile them. What I do is scan all of them, making sure they are all correct and then do a reconcile to mark them Reviewed/Reconciled at the same time.

Lots of people get this wrong, this isn't "update and forget" like some people think it is. It is "use the register's full functionality" instead of being stuck with trying to get the same functionality in a "Downloaded Transactions tab".

EDIT: One of the MAJOR differences between the two modes is "how much can you see at a time". In the Downloaded Transactions tab you have to click on a given transaction to see what category it is going to get (as it shows you that transaction in the register). With automatic transaction entry mode, the transactions are all there with their categories already selected for you to review and make sure they are what you want.

Pending transactions are moved/deleted from the Pending Transactions tab when I download tranactions. These are now marked as cleared because they cleared your financial institution. If you want uncleared transactions in your register, add them manually on the date of the transaction.

I would rather not have to manually enter them; based on my preferences, I should not have to.

I have the account marked show pending in the register.

I may be wrong but "show in the register" may mean in the pending tab of the register??

There is no Pending tab for the register, only pending transactions downloaded.

I want them in the register for the account

I always enter the transactions I just did into Quicken. When the pending show up in the register at the bottom, it lets me compare so I know they are legit. I've had my identity stolen, so I find this useful. If they were just entered, I would not have caught a couple when this happened to me.

EDIT: Evidently the dude above assumed I don't also use the match no match, which is probably how I described it.

I enter manually every transaction I do right after I did one whether it is after shopping or online. When the pending transaction shows, I check it. And when the transaction is downloaded I check it again to see if it does or doesn't match. I find this useful because, having already manually entered the transaction, I have something to check against and I don't have to keep a piece of paper around to check against. However, the pending showing at the bottom is not a big deal to me other than showing it went through, and the real checking I do is with the match, new function against my manual entry.
