Private stock now publicly traded

I have stock that we bought when it was an initial private offering. I recorded the purchase in a manual stock register. It is now publicly traded but when I try to add the ticker symbol it adds the stock as a new stock. How do I add the new stock ticker and get updated quotes without having to redo the register

@Mary B Vaghi - Here are some instructions I found with Copilot -

When a private stock you've been tracking in Quicken goes public, you’ll want to transition it from a manually entered security to one that can download quotes and transactions. Here's how to do it smoothly:

🔄 Transitioning a Private Stock to Public in Quicken

    1. Locate the Existing Manual Security

    • Go to Tools > Security List.
    • Find the manually created security (likely without a ticker symbol).
    • Click Edit next to the security name.

    2. Add the Ticker Symbol

    • In the Edit Security Details window:
    • Enter the official ticker symbol now that the stock is publicly traded.
    • Check the box for Download Quotes if you want Quicken to update prices automatically.

⚠️ If you enter the ticker symbol directly when adding a new security, Quicken may treat it as a separate stock. Instead, update the existing manual entry to preserve your transaction history.

    3. Enable Online Updates

    • After adding the ticker, Quicken will begin downloading:
    • Daily price updates
    • News and performance data
    • Brokerage transactions (if your account supports it)

    4. Verify Holdings and Cost Basis

    • Double-check that your original purchase(s) are still correctly reflected.
    • If you received shares through a grant or early investment, ensure the cost basis is accurate.

    5. Optional: Merge Duplicate Securities

    • If Quicken created a new entry when you added the ticker, you can:
    • Delete the new one (if it has no transactions), or
    • Use the Corporate Actions tool to merge or adjust holdings.

Hopefully other users here can verify or augment these instructions with details or suggestions, but at least this will give you a good start with the process.

There were also stock splits so the initial manual register has a lot of detail

How are you trying to “add the ticker symbol”? You should be able to edit the existing security in your file to add the correct ticker to that security (Edit Security Details).
