Why is category lookup/tag lookup so slow?

I've used Quicken for years to maintain several checkbooks. I don't pay bills, I don't do anything fancy, I just enter deposits and checks into the register manually, and I print the checks. Once in a while, I run a report or two.

Over the past several months, entering the checks has become very cumbersome. The date, payee, and amount go in fine. But when I enter the category and the tag, it takes the program 5 to 10 seconds each time to lookup the category/tag.

I've validated, I've super validated, and nothing seems to help. I don't know if it was a software update, or my file needs to be reindexed, but using this software is becoming really annoying.

Can you please tell me how to fix this?

I see many people posting with similar issues, but I see no solutions! We pay for this software- can someone please advise?

    Where is your data file stored?

    When you hold down CTRL and click HELP, About Quicken … what's shown in the lower 2 info boxes?
