How to set up Express Web connect

My bank is BOA. I can no longer download transactions or use one step update. I am using Quicken Classic. I was told by Bank of America I need to call Quicken to get Express Web Connect set up. I called 650-250-1900 but was on hold for 90 minutes and I finally hung up. Can someone tell me what I need to do to get this set up so I can download my transactions again?

BofA no longer supports EWC. They have now implemented support for EWC+.

To implement this connection change in your data file:

    1. If you have not already done so, enter and save the Opening Balance transaction dollar amount into the Memo field. (This is not a requirement but it can greatly simplify troubleshooting should the following process result in changing the Opening Balance transaction dollar amount…which can sometimes happen when changing connection methods.)
    2. Back up your data file.
    3. In the Account Register: Click on the upper right Gear icon > Edit Account Details > Online Services > Deactivate > Set Up Now > if needed, select Bank of America (it might default to this) > follow the prompts to complete the setup process. Quicken will open your browser and take you to the BofA website where you will need to log into your online account and then authorize BofA to share your financial data with Quicken.
    4. After you have completed the authorization process you should be taken back to Quicken. (If not, close the browser and navigate to Quicken.)
    5. In Quicken, make sure you click on the Actions column drop-down and LINK the imported data to your existing BofA account in Quicken.
    6. Your BofA account should now be set up for downloading via EWC+.
    7. If your account balance is not correct: Check the Opening Balance transaction to see if it has been changed from what you previously entered into the Memo field. If it has, correct the transaction dollar amount to match what is in the Memo field.
    8. If the account balance still in not correct: Scroll backward through the account register looking for duplicate transactions. If any are found, delete one and retain the other. If there are any duplicate transactions they most likely will occur within the last 90 days. If the account is still not in balance you might need to scroll back beyond 90 days to find and delete duplicates that might have been entered.

Did this resolve the issue for you?

Thanks the one step update is now working but it put my balance off. It automatically made an adjustment deposit with todays date to make the balance match. I try to go as far as the beginning of the year to see where the balance went off, and none of the balances matches any more. Everything was in balance today before the download ran. Any idea why everything is off?

See #7 and #8 in my prior post. One or both of these is the mostly cause of the issue you are seeing. Did you follow these troubleshooting steps and are you saying they did not resolve the issue?

Before trying to further troubleshoot the issue you might want to make note of the Balancing Adjustment transaction that Quicken entered and then delete that transaction. This will then make it easier to determine if/when any of the troubleshooting steps have resolved the issue.

Regarding #7: If you did not enter the Opening Balance transaction dollar amount into the Memo field prior to setting up the new connection you can restore any backup file dated prior to when you set up that new EWC+ connection to find out what the Opening Balance amount should be. Then open your primary data file, again, and check the Opening Balance that is shown there and correct it if needed.

I just thought of 2 other things you could try:

    • Look for a 2nd Opening Balance transaction in the account register. Sometimes, when setting up a new connection with a 2nd financial institution Quicken will enter a 2nd Opening Balance transaction for the new connection that was set up. Note that this 2nd Opening Balance transaction might not be at the top of the register….it could be located anywhere in the register. And easy way to check for this to click on the very oldest transaction in the register which should the to original Opening Balance transaction. Then click on the Payee column header which should sort the register so that if there is a 2nd Opening Balance transaction it will be placed right next to the original one. If you see a 2nd Opening Balance transaction you need to delete it.

    • How long has it been since you last downloaded from BofA prior to setting up this new download connection? Is there a gap between that last download and the new OSU setup download in which some transactions are missing? Most financial institutions limit the number of days of transactions that are downloaded during OSU. For example if BofA downloaded transactions for the last 30 days with your new EWC+ OSU but it was 45 days since your last prior OSU then there will be a gap of 15 days in which transactions did not download. You will need to review the transactions in the account register to see if there might be a gap in downloaded transactions. Then compare that time period to the same time period in your BofA online account to determine if there are any transactions that still need to be added to the register in Quicken.

I downloaded on October 6 and then again October 20. All transaction exist in quicken between that time. The adjustment quicken made yesterday made the balance correct. But all the previous balances are wrong. I went to beginning of register and see that quicken took 10 of my transactions and dated in with the year 1925. This is before my first transaction when I opened the account on March 2020.

    Hi Boatmaniac

I finally got this resolved. I see now that all of the payments it dated for the year 1925 were duplicates for the same transaction with the same month and day as year 2025. So I deleted them. And the deposits were not duplicated but were changed from year 2025 to year 1925. Once I changed the year back to 2025, everything is in balance. Thank you.

@entrack - So it was dupes, after all. But those 1925 dates were certainly strange. I don't recall having heard about that one before. I'm glad you were able to put it all together and get it figured out. Thank you for posting about it here as it might help others who encounter the same issue.
