Is there a way to customize the account intent? For example, instead of broadly using "investments", can something like "college savings", "emergency fund" and so on be separate account intents?

    No.

The closest thing you can do is to enter an "Investment goal" for a security. The drawback of that is that if you hold the same security in accounts with different goals, there is no way to distinguish them.

Consider renaming your accounts to include "college savings", etc. as part of the Account Name.

In the Account Details there is the Description field that you could use.
Then, under Edit > Preferences > Reports Only, you can opt to display Both account name and description in reports.

I do as UKR suggests and incorporate the purpose of the account in its name.
