Sorry you're experiencing this trouble.
Try going into preferences and unchecking the Automatically Download Investment Quotes.

I can't even get into the app. Upon opening I get the panel ("backing up...") and a spinning beachball that now leads to app shutting itself down0

Maybe OK now; app opened and I was able to turn off backups as described above0
