@Gilles99It used to work pretty well, but the developers apparently broke something in one of the updates this winter in doing some under-the-hood work to pave the way for more user control over categorization. The product manager has said we'll see changes soon... but we don't know exactly when that will be.
If you want to try the way Quicken Mac was originally designed to "learn" categorization, you must create a manual transaction with the same Payee, date and amount as as one you download. Drag one transaction over the other and Quicken will merge them into one -- and in the process should create an internal rule to categorize future transactions from the same Payee the same way. This process definitely did work originally, but users have reported mixed success recently. It's a bit time-consuming to set up for a lot of Payees, but when it works, it's a long-term time-saver. (I'd suggest trying a few Payees you use frequently, so you can see if it works the next time you download transactions using those Payees; if so, you can do this process for more Payees.
Since this process doesn't give users any way to edit the rules, the developers went back to the drawing board to create a way of memorizing transactions, and that's supposedly what's coming sometime in the future.Quicken Mac Subscription • Quicken user since 19935

Hello Giles 99,
Thank you for bringing this issue to the community, although I do apologize you have yet to receive a response.
What version/release of Quicken are you using? And what is the connection type used to link the account in Quicken to download transactions from the financial institution? To check the connection type, highlight the account in the register bar on the left, then go to Accounts>Settings. The connection type is listed in the top section titled "At your financial institution".
Unfortunately, Quicken for Mac does not have any settings to automatically assign or memorize categories.
If you have not already done so, please review the information on the following support article: https://www.quicken.com/support/learning-about-categories-and-tags-quicken-mac. This entails general information regarding categories in Quicken for Mac. You may find https://www.quicken.com/support/assigning-categories-or-tags-quicken-mac helpful as well.
Hope this helps!
