Can't activate 2020 quicken as an update to 2019

can't activate 2020 quicken as an update to 2019 how do I do it? all suggestions on package do not work.

Thank you for reaching out on the community and telling us about your issue. I do apologize for the issue you're having. Did you purchase the product recently? If so where? What exactly is happening? It sounds like you already have Quicken installed and purchased a code to activate it for another year.  If that's the case have you tried going across the top to help > Enter Activation Code. Are the steps listed in the box a bit different than what I've described? If so could you please let us know any additional details and we'll see what we can find.

I'm not sure that I understand this ... as Q has abandoned the "Year" designation in favor of, simply, "Quicken Subscription"

So, there shouldn't be any activation of "2020", instead of a simple update.

@george creasey, how long ago did you purchase the newer version? 

Had your subscription to Q2019 lapsed?

What error codes or messages are you getting why your try to activate?

Where/how did you make the recent purchase?  If from an online retailer,  did you receive an  "Activation Code" via email?  OR, do you have a Q2020 CD?

I purchased quicken today at Best Buy and installed it over 2019 and it said on the box it said I had to activate it with the # on the box. It never asked for the # and no activate quicken in the help section. In the help it gives whats new in 2020. Does this mean it is activated?

Since your subscription is active it isn't going to ask for activation.  If you select Help -> About Quicken it will tell you how much longer you have on the subscription.

To "add time to the subscription" you select: Help -> Enter Activation Code...
And enter the one on the box.

Also just for reference, you don't have to install since the subscription keeps itself up to date.  If you install all it is going to do is install and update to that same version.  It is the activate code entry that is important.

Use the activation code.  The install doesn't change the subscription, the activation code does.

It never asks for activation code and it is not in the help section. I can not find how to enter the code

It should always be in the Help menu.

No to Question asked.

That's wrong. (Procedure you used.)

You have Quicken 2019, installed and you purchased Quicken from Best Buy.
You made the mistake in installing Quicken over Quicken 2019.

Let's start over. Use this procedure:  https://community.quicken.com/discussion/7844658/installing-reinstalling-windows-quicken-subscription-editions

After you get back to what you had with 12 days left.
Open Quicken.
At the top, click Help.
Now click Enter Activation Code.
Takes a little time for Window to populate.
Enter the Activation Code that came with Best Buy Quicken Purchase.
Click Activate Membership.



Questions? You should start over to eliminate problems. Do not skip steps.

I know this is frustrating, but remember we can't see your screen.

Since the menu item should be that suggests that there is a problem with Quicken so that is why @thecreator suggested first doing the install procedure above.  Hopefully that would get you the Enter Activation Code menu and you could continue.

But also note that Quicken support can screen share with you to see things that we might miss because we can't see it.  And they might have other tools for updating your subscription in another way.

I started over and reinstalled quicken 2020 and this time enter avtivation code was there and everything is now OK thanks to all of you for your help. I am 76 years old and always need help.
