Why does the closing balance column (last one on right) begin with a massive negative number, which has the graph starting from a massive deficit? There is no indication as to where this figure comes from.

The initial closing balance will include all past due reminders for the account.  I suggest you press Ctrl + J.  If there are overdue reminders, perhaps you should reset their Due next on: date.  Otherwise, you may want to review: https://www.quicken.com/support/advanced-data-file-troubleshooting-correct-problems-quicken-windows
