I often have reason to assign 3 different items to a transaction. For example with Christmas shopping. I want to assign a transaction as clothing but also for Christmas and also to my daughter Marisa. Would you suggest clothing as the category and assign 2 tags (Christmas and Marisa)?

I would categorize such a purchase using a Gifts category; I'd keep Clothing for your own clothing purchases. But it's a personal choice how you categorize things. 

If you have a few regular types of gifts -- say, Christmas, Birthdays, Charity -- you might consider having them as sub-categories of Gifts.
