I have a dozen files in my backup folder with this name format:
QData-R-34.24-2021-09-03.QDF-backup

These are in addition to the "normal" file name format:
QData-2022-01-19.PM03.55.QDF-backup

What are these -R- files?

Those are automatic backups created when you are about to update to a newer release of Quicken. Your example is a file backed up just before Quicken offered to update to R34.24 (whether you accepted the offer or not).

I thought it was a backup of a file using the R34.24 version before (possibly) upgrading to a newer Release -

You are correct, sir. Apologies for the off-by-one error.

Just trying to avoid head shaking by others. Apology accepted but not expected nor necessary.

Everyone else has explained why they are showing up, so I'll tell you that until you really do update from R34.24, it is safe to delete them and save some space.  When you do finally update, you should save that one for a short while in case you need to revert back to R34.24.
