I have many vehicles, cars, trucks, boat, toy haulers and gas powered equipment
Rap2027
I want to track all costs i.e. fuel, parts, maintenance, mileage, hours used for each piece of equipment. Is it better to use a subcategory for each piece of equipment or use a tag for each piece of equipment to keep the number of categories and subcategories low?

I would suggest using a tag for each vehicle.

If you create subcategories, you would have to create a fuel cat for each whereas it only takes one Tag to cover all of the cats that an item might need.
Go with Tag.
