I am getting error messages during backup and at the end screen is blank.

error messages are: unable to close files, unable to load item list file, and unable to reload current file. I updated Quicken when I opened it today.
I suggest you access the Quicken file in a folder on an internal drive and not allow other programs to access the Quicken file at the same time (for example, Dropbox).
