Why does an account suddenly have balances that are way off?

I'm using Quicken for Windows, version R42.8, on Windows 10 and 11. I don't download data of any sort. Suddenly, I notice all of the balances in my checking register are way off. At first, I was at a loss. Eventually I found Validate & Repair, and that fixed it. I have encountered this issue many times and Validate & Repair always fixes it. I'd like to know what causes this so I can prevent it from happening again.

If you aren't already, you may want to verify the register is sorted appropriately and there aren’t any unexpected filters being applied: open the register, select the
Date
column header (you want the small triangle to right of
Date
to point up) and Reset (if available, otherwise clear the
Search
box).

I will check the sorting the next time this happens. I do believe only the balances are off, not the payee, date, category, memo or payment amount. Validate and Repair corrects all the errors.
