    Just so I understand, is this what's happening? You download a transaction and then manually change the category. Then when you download again, the transaction that you already manually changed the category of gets changed back to what it was when it originally downloaded? That should definitely not happen. Once you manually change a category on a transaction, it should not be affected by a subsequent download.

    OR... are you saying that the NEXT downloaded transaction for the same Payee fails to use the same category as the one you manually changed earlier? That would be a different situation. In that case, there are a couple things you can do:

    1) Go to menu Quicken > Preferences > Connected Services. Toggle the checkbox "Automatically improve the quality of downloaded payee names and categories" to whatever setting it is not currently. See if that improves things.

    2) Set up a QuickFill rule (menu Window > Payees & Rules > QuickFill Rules) for the Payee in question. (Click the plus sign at the bottom of the window). Enter the payee name and category (and any other fields you want entered) in the window. Check both the Lock This Rule and Use as Default checkboxes. You can also create a QuickFill rule by clicking menu Transactions > Save QuickFill Rule while you have the existing transaction selected in the register.

    @cabsouth Here's another possible avenue to pursue…

    Check Preferences > Mobile, Web & Alerts to see if Sync is set to On or Off. If you don't use the mobile app, it should be set to Off. If it is on, you want to turn it Off, and then go to Preferences > Connected Services and click the button to Reset your Quicken Cloud file.

    If it is On, and you need it on because you use the mobile ap or web interface, this could be the source of your problem. If Quicken thinks the data in Quicken Cloud is newer than what's in your local data file, it will download the data from Quicken Cloud — and wipe out the changes you made locally. Mind you, it should be smart enough to not do this, but it can happen. One key thing is after you entered your category edits, did you then do Accounts > Sync to Mobile? That should force Quicken Cloud to upload the edits you've made. I would try that, then quit Quicken, and see if your categories stick the next time you launch Quicken and download transactions.

    Need to clarify something... Are you saying

    (1) You have a manually entered transaction that is matched to the downloaded transaction and the category gets changed when you download? (That should never happen.)

    --or--

    (2) When a downloaded transaction that is not matched appears in the register, the category is not what you expect based on previous or QuickFill transactions?

    Or is it something else? Please clarify and we can take it from there.

    The transaction was downloaded, not previously entered. I then change the downloaded transaction to the appropriate category manually. The next time I download transactions, the categories I entered manually are overiden by the Quicken app into different categories.

    I am intermittently having nearly the same problem.

    I download transactions and change one (or more) transaction's category(ies) from "Uncategorized" to the proper category(ies). When I next download, Quicken displays this (these) previously downloaded transaction(s) as newly downloaded, with blue status dot, and has changed the previously entered category back to "Uncategorized".

    I am not using Mobile & Web, and sync is turned off. I have no Renaming Rules set. Possibly related: The "Automatically improve the quality of downloaded payee names and categories" preference is UN-checked, however Quicken IS changing the Payee names. (I periodically need to right-click and use the "Revert to downloaded Payee name" in order to change back to a correct Payee.)

    This overwriting behavior started about 2 months ago, although the Payee changing started after a mid-2021 update. Both seem like bugs to me. Quicken support had me re-download from a backup and that one time the behavior did not repeat itself; however it also disconnected all of my downloading accounts from the cloud, and when they were reconnected, a number of transactions were overwritten, taking hours to resolve.

    If anyone is experiencing the same behavior, please post – Quicken seems not to believe there is anything wrong going on with the software. Thanks!

    I had the same issue and turning off "Automatically improve the quality of downloaded payee names and categories" seems to have worked for now, although the quality of payee names is not very good!
