I can't reconcile checking account this month, despite reconciling last month & all prior

I called tech support and spoke with someone named Israel. He was not helpful, did not make sense, and the call got disconnected. My current register goes back to 2019 and the initial balance is a large negative number that makes no sense. I did a validate and this did not help. Israel told me to go back to 1/1/2022 and check every transaction against my bank statements; later apparently he thought I should go back to the earliest transaction (2019). Then he talked about doing a restore from a backup. I'll probably have to call tech support on Monday, but does anyone have any suggestions?

Well, there's your problem right there.  With an incorrect opening balance you'll never be able to reconcile.
There's been a spate of problems lately with Quicken changing the Opening Balances of Accounts, and you've fallen victim to this issue.
Open a backup from a time when you know that Account's opening balance is correct.  When you do the restore, be sure to "make a copy", not "overwrite" your current file; all you really want to do here is see what the correct opening balance for that Account.  Having determined the correct opening balance, open your current file and enter that correct number.  You should be able to reconcile at that point.
In that Opening Balance transaction you might want to enter the correct opening balance dollar amount in the Memo field in case this happens again.
  • Thanks very much. But I can't seem to find the right backup file, and I am getting confused. I tried one that I thought was good, from back in July when I created my current file. I copied it, not restore. I wrote down the opening balance. When I went back to my current file, I no longer saw the huge negative balance I'd seen before, but the same exact opening balance as was on the "copy" file. Yet I still can't reconcile. I guess I'll have to call tech support next week and ask them to do a remote session and guide me.

I think Quicken should have tech support available on weekends, if not 24/7. We pay good money for the software, but although there are some very good tech support agents, others seem to lack sufficient training and experience. I've also noticed within the past 6 months or one year, that One-step Update takes substantially longer than in the past.

I have been having the same issue. It's very frustrating. One day, I had two credit card balances that were off. I found a beginning balance on the account where it should have been zero. It's maddening. Today, I'm trying to reconcile my bank account and the beginning balance it's showing on Quicken is different from what my last reconciliation shows. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING! My bank account is DECADES old, so to try to find whatever has been screwed up is close to impossible. I have also been having trouble with the Business Account at work where they have screwed up by 941 and my workers compensation liability. I'm sick of it. And no one can come up with an answer. No one seems to even understand the problem.
  • Thanks LFrederich! I feel your pain (and frustration!) I would like to hope that Quicken puts all efforts to immediately fix whatever this software glitch is. We actually pay good money for the software. This would be the time for them to earn it and show that they actually care about their customers.

I have spent hours tonight backing up from different quicken files. I seem to find the right one, but it's from a month ago. They when I download my transactions again, it totally screws up my account. My checking account starts in May 2005. I have found two large transactions that screwed it up, but now I'm still off more than $3000. I've looked back 2 years comparing to my bank reconciliations and it goes back farther than that. I have exported all 12000 lines of my bank account from 2 different backups thinking that would help, but it still doesn't I am at a loss. I cannot for the life of me figure out HOW they could have screwed up the program so badly. I have years of backups on external hard drives, but I really don't know that they will help me at this point. I have no idea what to do. I am so frustrated, I could scream. I've been using Quicken since it was a DOS version. This is totally unacceptable. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE! In the past few months, I have had bogus beginning balances on two of my credit card accounts. What am I supposed to do? I don't believe anyone at Intuit has a clue how to help. So what? Now I'm just left hanging with no idea how to go. I'm an accountant for goodness sake and this is NOT my first rodeo.

Are you guys aware of the issue that Quicken has aware since 9/1? The one I have been tracking is with Chase Bank, but I know there have been others.

I have balanced to the penny since 1997!!! After I did the update in august my balances were nuts!! Huge discrepancies. It doesn’t matter how far back I go to grab a backup, once I open it the file is totally f***ed🤬 I’m a Mac user but run a Windows install on my machine [Removed - Disruptive]
I think I will just have to suffer the horror of starting an entirely NEW file🤦🏻‍♀️
  • Houston, we have a problem!
  • OK folks, my problem is solved (checking account is reconciled), thanks to a very helpful and patient tech support agent named Queren. Turns out that 8 transactions that were on my current checking account statement did not download into Quicken. The agent did not know why this happened, but somehow the bank must have not sent those transactions to Quicken. She said that since these all happened in the same time window (9/28 - 10/7) there might have been a "connectivity" issue, and if it happens again, maybe call my bank.

Would you mind disclosing the name of the bank involved and the method used by that bank for downloading transactions?
My Schwab Bank Account frequently has missing transactions, in a fairly random fashion, since EWC+ was instigated.  Since I check my Schwab Accounts frequently I haven't had any reconciliation problems, (manually marking those transactions a cleared), and as every check and deposit that I initiate has been entered manually there's no danger of a overdrawn situation, but for people who rely on Automatic entries to fill in the checking Account transactions missing downloads could be a disaster.
  • The bank is Truist, f/k/a SunTrust, and they use EWC as far as I know.
