How to move an investment account to a new quicken file
Scott M
Hi -- what are the steps to export and then import a quicken investment account from one quicken file to another Quicken file? Thank you.
I have Quicken Premier for Windows R44.28.

I successfully imported 10 years worth of data into a new Quicken file since my old one got corrupted a year ago. I tried it multiple times and learned the preferred sequence of steps for me. Then I prototyped it twice before my final one. This is the cheat sheet I created for myself in case I have to do it again or share with others. I hope this helps you a bit.

REQUIREMENTS:
* Have two computers (or VM) so that you can have the old and new files open side-by-side (This is KEY)
(Remember if you re-import something, you will have duplicates)
* Create systematic backups with meaningful names at every step
OLD FILE DATA EXPORT:
* Export data in QIF format, preferably in multiple chunks.
NEW FILE SETUP:
* Start with a new test file
* Setup tax filing (single, married, ...)
* Preferences: Edit investment Prefs > Complete & Enable transfer detection
* Import Categories & memorized payees
* Fix Categories (duplicates and add tax line items)
* Fix Memorized payees
* Import Security list
* Review security list for accuracy
* Create custom Fund Types if you had them before
* Create category groups if you had them before
* Create your renaming rules
* Validate File
ACCOUNT CREATION:
* Create your accounts manually first
* Setup paycheck
* Edit "Acc Type" as needed
* Validate File
TRANSACTION IMPORT:
* Import transactions
* Check for and cleanup duplicates, specially in investment accounts
* Correct investment account action (Deposits switched to Misc Income!)
* Fix Assets (cars & house)
* Double check for security list duplicates and cleanup
* Validate File
FINAL OPTIONAL ADD-ONS:
* Recreate Reports
* Add Flags as needed
* Add Attachments as needed

Oops. I misread the question. If it is all the transactions in one investment account, you can use a QIF export/import. Note that the transfers might be messed up in the new data file and have to be fixed.

- I didn’t see a qualifier about a single security. Appears to be an entire account to transfer. Seems like a QIF export and import should be effective with caveats about transfers, security names and info, and other cautions you know more about than me.

"...and other cautions you know more about than me?" Yes it is an entire account. My hope is that Quicken or a Quicken expert has documented the steps including any cautions or caveats, that I can then follow. Ideas?
