What is the intented purpose of the action column?

    If you want to record information about the type of transaction (Debit, Credit, ATM W/D, etc.). Some financial institutions download text into this field, some don't. I don't have it visible in any of my registers and don't use it, but some people find it useful.

    You can really use it for anything you dream up. Personally, I use it to record the method of payment (eg. PayPal, ApplePay, etc.) which is separate from the account on which the charge is recorded. That way I don't have to put that in the memo field.
