Lost Quicken 2009 Deluxe following Win10 reinstallation
My tech "guru" decided to solve a computer issue by reinstalling win10. For the life of me I cannot find my original disk (spent at least an hour looking). Fortunately I keep backups of the Quicken files on an external drive. I also make weekly backups of my computer on that same drive. So what I need is to be able to reinstall 2009 R7.
BTW, I ran into a similar issue trying to retrieve my Firefox bookmarks. After much back and forth with support help I learned files on the b-u disc were compressed and required a program to un-pack them. Are the Quicken files stored in a similar manner?
The attached screen shot shows what I get after a search on the b-u drive.

Thanks in advance Don

Unless you are a computer whiz, you can't just copy a program from one computer to another which is what you are trying to do by pulling data from the backup. Windows programs have to be installed since they put information in the Windows Registry and have lots of other pieces that are needed.
Regarding your question about compression, that is a function of the backup software and not how Quicken installs itself on a computer. Backup software generally compresses the information to save space on the target backup drive.

You should at least try to convert to the 2013 version since you don’t use any online services or download transactions now. Then it should run on newer versions of Windows. Starting in 2014 they instituted an ID password to get into your own data. I’m staying on 2013.
2013 should run on Newer Windows. You can download 2013 Deluxe for free using this how to convert article. It’s under Converting from Quicken 2004-2009. Click on the Blue words....Quicken 2013 for Windows in step 3.

And FYI - If your Quicken was before 2010 you should have several files making up the data. The main data file ends in .QDF. All Quicken versions prior to QW2010 store your data in a series of files all sharing the same filename but with different extensions like - .QDF .IDX, .QEL, .QPH and all 4 of those files were rolled into a single-file .QDF starting in 2010.

Okay. Let's regroup. I am not trying to install the actual program from my b/u. The b/u is strictly all my Quicken records. I was showing this only to establish that I am the owner of Quicken Deluxe. My machine was possessed by gremlins so my IT-type guru decided to completely reinstall Win10. This meant I needed to reinstall ALL of my programs. The data was saved on an external drive.
So my real need is to be able to reinstall Quicken 2009. However, I cannot find the original disk.
Once I have Quicken up and running I can worry about replacing my data from the backups that were saved via Quicken itself. So they should work fine. Note they do have the Q-extensions.
I guess I confused the issue by naming the image uploaded "Quicken b-u screen shot". It's a copy of the files saved by Win7 Backup and Restore. Sorry about that.
I am uploading a new image of the relevant backups Quicken made itself. You can see the most recent b/u was June 10 which was just prior to the disaster.
Look for "Quicken data files on b-u drive.jpg".
I hope I have clarified things a bit.

Yes we were talking about installing the program. We know you aren't trying to install it from a backup. Just use my posts and download the 2013 program for free. It's better than your older program. It will open and convert your data files.

So my real need is to be able to reinstall Quicken 2009. However, I cannot find the original disk.
Without the original installation disk, you are out of luck. Possible solutions are to buy one on eBay (that is always a gamble) or use the QW2013 install available at the link that @volvogirl cited in her 5:32PM 6/20/23 post above.
It will read and convert your 2009 data into QW2013 format which uses only one file (.QDF) which is a zip-like combination of the files in the 2009 data file set. It will have a slightly different user interface, but not too different. I run it in parallel with current subscription Quicken (for testing) and it works great for my needs.
Whatever you decide, be sure to put which ever install program away for safe keeping, you never know when you might need it again.

And if you do find and install an older version One of the SuperUsers has posted the update patches for older versions (2000 and newer) of Quicken

Notice, that your 5/10/23 backup has 5 different file extensions, but your 6/10/23 backup only has 3.
The 6/10/23 backup is incomplete and might not work. Try the 5/23 backup instead.
