Updating accounts and closing accounts

When I try to update any of my accounts I get an alert: "You cannot transfer into your mutual fund account prior to a Placeholder Transaction". I can't find any mutual fund account with any entry prior to a Placeholder Transaction.

I get the same alert when I try to 'close' an account.

This is the screen shot with the error message.

I can't make any entries in my Quicken account now.

    Hello @Odontolith,

Let’s try a few troubleshooting steps for this issue—these steps should resolve things for you, but if not, please come back and post more about your experience so we can investigate.

    First, backup your Quicken file.

    Validate:

    1. File
    2. Validate and Repair File...
    3. Validate File
    4. Click OK
    5. Close the Data Log
    6. Close Quicken (leave it closed for at least 5 secs)
    7. Reopen Quicken and see if the issue persists.

If the issue persists, proceed to Super Validate. If the issue is resolved after performing validation, then please disregard the instructions to Super Validate.

    Super Validate:

    1. File
    2. Hold CTRL + Shift and click Validate and Repair File...
    3. Super Validate File
    4. Click OK
    5. Close the Data Log
    6. Close Quicken (leave it closed for at least 5 secs)
    7. Reopen Quicken and see if the issue persists.

    ThenI

Thank you for responding to my question. I have been out of town and was unable to try your solution until this morning. The following screenshots document my steps in trying to update my Quicken Files.

    Beginning Screen

    I selected Update File

    Then I selected Update Now

The 'One Step Update Progress' began

Then the 'You cannot Transfer into your Mutual Fund Account prior to a placeholder Transaction"

I am getting the same results: NO updates to my files.

The above screen shots are taken of each step of the process I used to try to update my files.

Do you see placeholders in your account(s)? If not, you might need to go to Edit > Preferences > Investments and check the box "Show hidden transactions".

No additional transactions appear after I select for showing hidden transactions

I guess, I should ask, "What are placeholders and how are they identified?"

They are indicators of missing information in your investment register, inserted by Quicken when it needs to correct the number of shares of a security. You do not want them in your register. If you have any, they should be "resolved" by providing the missing information. Start here:

I am no longer getting the "Placeholder missing" error.

Now when I try to update my accounts, it appears to be updating, I get a notice that the account has updated, but NO information is updated.
