Create a way to track the separate average cost basis of a security where you have both covered shares (stocks purchased in 2011 and afterward or mutual funds purchased in 2012 and afterward) and uncovered shares (stocks purchased before 2011 and mutual funds purchased before 2012).

This only makes sense if there are clear IRS rules on exactly how to do this calculation. Do you have a reference for that?
