Quicken shows investment value is shares + cash

Although I am a long-time Quicken user, I have only recently started tracking my 401(k) in Quicken. My problem is the value of the 401(k) updates is nearly double the actual value - it shows the breakdown of stocks/bonds and then it shows the entire amount as cash.

Example: If my actual fund was worth $1,000. It says I have four stocks at $250 each and cash at $1,000 thereby making the total value of the fund $2,000.

I initially used Quicken connect and then tried direct connect with the same results.

Take a look in your transaction register to see if there are any placeholder transactions at the beginning of the account history, creating the incorrect cash amount; it may be as simple as deleting such an incorrect transaction inserted by Quicken.

Next, see how the transactions for your various security holding were created. Are they Buy transactions or Add Shares transactions? Add Shares creates the share holdings "out of thin air", while a Buy transaction uses cash to fund the shares.

Also, if there isn't an opening balance/placeholder transaction creating the bogus cash, what happens if you create an adjustment transaction to reduce the cash to zero (or the proper balance)? If you then update the account, does the cash balance stay correct, or does it bounce back up to the previous value?

Finally, would you share the name of the brokerage company, as some users here might know of issues with specific financial institutions.

Jacobs…I got stuck on your first suggestion as "transactions" is not highlighted for me to select. I only have the option to select Dashboard or Portfolio.

    Fund is with PNC Investments.

Go to the Settings for that account and see if Invested Tracking Method is set to Simple. It needs to be set to Detail for you to be able to see transactions. And if Detail is grayed out, you'll need to change the connection method.

Interesting. I followed your suggestion, although the account is pretty detailed. All the funds/share/price/value are populated. But this is the message I got when I tried to switch to "detail".
