Action Type

The action type is missing when I try to add shares or sell shares. By default, it assumes every transaction is a "buy". The field is no longer editable. Is this a bug?

"Action" is an optional field which Quicken doesn't use. Some people like to use it to add more information about their transactions, but I've found I can work perfectly well without it.

Where you see "Buy", you'll note it's under the heading of "Type", not "Action". Type is what Quicken uses for all tracking and calculations about investment transactions. There are many types, like Buy, Sell, Interest, Reinvest Dividend, Reinvest Long-0Term Capital Gain, and more.

You can make the "Action" field visible in a transaction account; click Columns and add Action if you want. However, you can only enter/edit the Action field for "banking" transactions, which are those transactions where Type=Payment/Deposit.

Banking transactions are exactly identical to transactions in any banking account like checking or credit card, with access to the Action field as well as Transfer, Check No, splits, etc. Investing transactions use a fixed format of fields determined by the transaction Type, and you cannot use the other optional fields.

i’ve been using quicken in different formats for almost 20 years. it was working fine until a week ago. now the only investment transaction i can enter is Buy. there’s no option to select sell, add, etc.

Do you have the Type column visible in your register? If so, can't you click in the Type field and pul down the menu of all the investment transaction types?

No. The entire drop down is missing and the field isn’t editable. whenever i add a transaction the format defaults to input fields for a buy transaction only.

This describes what you would see if the "Type" column is not visible in your register.

So, just to be clear, do you have the "Type" column visible, as shown in my screenshot above?

And if so, in that field, are you saying it shows "Buy" like this…

…but you can't type over/edit the word "Buy"?

A screen shot might be helpful (block out any personal information).

@PR_ I came back to this thread to see if you had replied. I can see you marked my replies as Rejected, but you didn't post any reply. Can you post back here and answer the question I asked above about whether the Type column is visible?

I added the Type column and the options are back. Odd that I had to do this, but it worked. Thanks!
