Why isn't the total for one of the categories in my budget the sum of the subcategories?

Because the budget is built to allow you to put additional money into a main category beyond the sum of its subcategories. So you could have a category with $50 in subcategory A and $75 in subcategory B, but you also want to budget an extra $30 each month for additional expenses, so you can enter $30 in the main category, and Quicken will show $30 + $50 + $75 = $155. If you want the main category to be just the sum o the subcategories without anything additional, just click on the main category amount and click Delete or type zero — then Quicken will show the sum of the subcategories.
