New user - How do I get Payees to automatically get their correct Category (edit)

Been a Quickbooks gal - trying Quicken for personal :)

How do I get Payee's to automatically go to their correct category once I have downloaded and have 1700 transactions and don't want to individually categorize each one. So fun!

The first time you see a payee, categorize it correctly, and all the rest will have that category. You will have to do this once per payee but that shouldn't take too long.

Once they are downloaded, changing them in the register is your only choice. To do that, sort the register by Payee, select a range of transactions with the same payee and do a right click on the selected range and pick Edit Transactions. You can change the category on all of the selected transactions.

For the future, create Memorized Payees with a $0 amount with the correct category and lock it, then Quicken will use it as a template for the matching downloaded transactions.

If you don't like the Payees as they are downloaded, because they have the store # in them or they are sort of cryptic, use a Renaming Rule to change the Payee to something that you prefer.

Renaming happens before Memorized Payee, so you would want your Memorized Payee to use the result of the Renaming action.

As an example, my downloaded transactions from my grocery store have a Payee with the # in it along with some other info, I rename them to a shorter name and my Memorized Payee is the shorter name and Groceries for the category. I lock the Memorized Payee so that the $0 and category are never changed by subsequent use, the correct amount is provided by the download.

Most of my Walmart purchases are for groceries, so I want it to be the category in the MP, so, if and when I buy something different at Walmart, automotive or electronics, I just change the MP suggested Groceries to the appropriate category.

Thank you so much - you guys are awesome.

Also how do I get the app on my desktop so I don't have to download each time. Maybe I'm going to the wrong site? each time I go to the site it brings me to my account page - and makes me download the program each time. is it as simple as saving to my desktop once i have the program running or do I need to do something else?

You mention downloading the Quicken app, but nothing about installing. Have you attempted to install? Once Quicken is installed, you should not be prompted to the myaccount page other than to login to your Quicken account, which is required. And even that prompt is from within Quicken.

The Windows icon should show properties to run qw.exe, if the icon you are clicking on doesn't point to that, you are clicking on the wrong thing.
