Adjust Account Balance - date confusion?

I use the "Adjust Account Balance" menu item to deal with accounts where I don't care to fiddle with individual transactions. I've noticed that with some accounts it defaults to today's date and with other accounts it seems to default to the date of the first transaction. I always want today's date. Is there a way to set this? Why does it behave in two ways?

I don't create account balance adjustments, so can't answer why, but I have a suggestion of an easy workaround: just always press 't' in the date field to make it jump to today's date.
