missing transaction after correcting download error due to a bank account being closed

I am on Quicken Deluxe, Windows subscription R56.9, build 27.1.56.9. Yesterday I was doing an Online Center transaction 'update and send' through KeyBank to my checking and credit card accounts. I got an error back indicating a problem with the down load. I went through the steps to have the system fix the error. I was able to confirm that one of the accounts I had been pulling transactions for had recently been closed. I was pulling transactions for 3 accounts, now I need to only pull for two. The system seemed to successfully correct the problem. However, when I reran the download I got the same error. I tried it two or three times, receiving the same error each time. I did notice an indicator at the bottom of the register page indicating a download of no transactions. I thought the system might require some signal that would occur with the passage of time, so I waited to today to try again. The download seem to work fine but it only included two new transactions which probably hit the bank last night. My guess is that the system thinks it downloaded the transaction between last night and the last time I did a down load, which was a few days ago. My question is, can I trigger the system to download the missing transactions? There won't be a ton of transaction, so I could enter them manually. If that alternative is suggested, is there anything I should be cautious about?

There is no way to "trigger the system" to do what you want it to do. Banks will download a set number of days of transactions every time we do OSU or Update Now and they decide how many days they will download. We have no control over that. What happens when a download is imported into Quicken is that Quicken "remembers" all of those transactions. Then the next time OSU or Update Now is done, Quicken will screen out those transactions that were previously downloaded. This is by design to ensure that our account registers do not get loaded up with duplicate transactions every time we run OSU or Update Now.

You're best bet would be to restore a backup file from just prior to yesterday. That file will not have those transactions "remembered" so they should show up in the register. If you do this, you might want to give the restored backup file a unique file name during the restoring process so it does not overwrite your current data file. That way if things don't work out the way you like you can go back to the current file by simply reopening it.

If you do not have a recent backup file then maybe your best option would be to manually enter the missing transactions.

I just realized there are more transactions than I anticipated. Would I be likely to run into problems if I imported the missing transactions using a qfx file?

The 1st thing I would do before proceeding down this path is to backup the data file.

I think the biggest issue would be that you might have some duplicate transactions if there are already some transactions in the register for the date range you select for manual download. Some banks allow you to select specific dates for the download date range so that can be helpful in preventing duplicates. But others will allow you to download transactions for entire statements so this increases the risk of duplicate transactions. This is not an insurmountable issue. Make sure you clearly understand the date range you are missing transactions for and then make sure all transactions that are already in the register are Reconciled. Then after the manual download/import of the QFX file you can simply scroll through the register and delete any non-Reconciled duplicates.

Sometimes when manually downloading/importing a QFX file it can be imported directly into the account in Quicken without needing to first deactivate the existing download connection for that account. Other times, however, Quicken will not let you do that. In this case you will need to go to the Online Services tab of Account Details, Deactivate the account and then try importing the file, again.

If you do need to deactivate the account, you will need to do Add Account or Set Up Now after you have completed the manual import in order to download, again via OSU or Update Now.

One last comment: You might want to be proactive and enter/save the Opening Balance transaction dollar amount into the Memo field of that transaction. Sometimes (not always) when changing or updating a connection method (and Web Connect…manually downloading and importing a QFX file…is a connection method) the Opening Balance transaction dollar amount will get changed. Entering that dollar amount into the Memo field makes it easy to determine if this happens and what you need to do to correct it to.

    Any questions?

thanks again for the information. I did decide to manually enter the information. I imported the file into Excel to see what would have been in it. I found the QFX contained a couple of errors. Don’t know why.

Yes, sometimes it's best to just bite the bullet and do the manual entry. That is odd that the QFX file contained errors but it does sometimes happen. Not sure why, either, but it is the banks that creates the QFX file so something must have broken in that process there.
