Quicken Changing Balances

Twice in the past 3-4 months Quicken has changed my balances in several accounts. This causes HOURS of reconciliation that should be unnecessary. I talked to support and they insist that Quicken would not do that. No help at all. I told him I could download a backup that would show the changed balance. He had no interest in helping me. His solution was to start a new Quicken file. What? Lose 6 years of history? I have only 6 years history because that was their solution 6 years ago when I was having problems they did not want to debug. I'm about fed up with Quicken. Are there alternatives? I've been with Quicken for 20+ years, but I'm tired of Quicken introducing bugs in their program and refusing to admit it.

where or how were the balances changed ?

an ongoing anomaly is Quicken randomly will change the account Opening Balance -
always a good place to check when things are wonky -

We suggest users go thru their accounts, and copy the Opening Balance amount into the Memo field for safe keeping -

The balance changes that I can easily find are in the beginning balance. It is too bad Quicken support cannot admit this lovely Quicken "feature" exists. Good solution. Thank you for your help!

The Opening Balance changing issue is something that generally (but only sometimes) happens only during Reset Account, Reauthorize, when Deactivating/Reactivating the account or when changing the connection method….essentially when the connection method is being changed or updated. I long ago entered and saved the correct dollar amount for Opening Balance transactions into the Memo fields of those transactions. This makes it always easy to see when this issue has occurred and what it needs to be corrected to.

Regarding alternatives to Quicken: Quicken will not permit any discussions regarding alternative competitive products. Any such discussions are quickly redacted or deleted. Understandable since they own this Quicken Community site. If you are serious about it you should do a Google search. Whether or not the options that come up in that search are suitable for you is something only you can decide but I will say that you likely won't find anything that is as full featured and comprehensive as what Quicken is….and they all have their own downsides and sets of issues. Also in many cases they cannot import data from Quicken or some of the data will not import properly so you would most likely be starting over from scratch if you changed to a different.

Yes the Opening Balance does in fact change at times that seem random but usually when resetting an account or group of accounts with an associated login. It would be nice to prevent this or have at least an advisory message that it has occurred. My work around is to put the date and balance in the memo field so I am able to change the opening balance after the program changed it to get back to the original register balances. It is a work around, but will save you endless time reconciling an account that doesn't need to be reconciled.

This issue occurs for me only on the web - not in the desktop app.

I am using Quicken Classic for Windows (OS is Windows 11 Home).

In my case, I have a checking account with an opening balance of $5000 from 1 Aug 2023. I then have perhaps 1000 transactions in the intervening 11 months until today. When I synchronize with the desktop version, eveything is perfect. The opening balance on the web is $5000 and the current balance is likewise correct.

Then, when a new transaction comes through (let's say it is for $35.00), and I access Quicken on the web (not in the desktop app), my currect balance becomes incorrect and remains incorrect until I log in with my desktop app, download all the transactions, and then sync. Then, the web app again is correct and the erroneous opening balance is rectified. I don't have to enter any "reconciling transactions" or other workarounds. I simply use my desktop app as I did up until starting to use the browser-based web app about a year ago.

The issue always seems to be that the opening balance on the web has magically "self-adjusted" and does not flag this or explain why it did this. In this case, instead of the opening balance being $5000, it has changed to become $5035.

Anyone else seeing similar behavior on the web? As I said, desktop version never has this issue.
