How to continue using existing Mastercard register due to replacement of new account number.

I needed to get a new MasterCard account number to replace a fraudulent transaction. How do I change the account number in "Account Details" so that I can continue to use the same register and also download transactions into the register?

How I have done this in the past:

    1. Enter and save the Opening Balance dollar amount into the Memo field of that transaction. Once in a while when adding or changing the connection method of an established account, the Opening Balance dollar amount will get changed. Having it entered into the Memo field beforehand makes it very easy to determine if this has happened and what needs to be done to correct for it.
    2. Make sure all transactions that are already in your credit card account register are all marked as Reconciled.
    3. Back up the data file. If something does go wrong the backup file can be restored and all will then be as it was before.
    4. Account Register > upper right Gear icon > Edit Account Details > Online Service tab > Deactivate > General tab > remove all Financial Institution Information (everything above the Contact Name field) > Online Services tab > Set Up Now > follow the prompts to set up the account for downloads.
    5. During the download process you will likely be prompted to tell Quicken what to do with the downloaded data. Hopefully it at least the new account number will be shown. Make sure that data is LINKED to your existing account in Quicken (i.e., the one that you just deactivated). This will add the new account number into the Financial Institution Information section.
    6. If the account balances are not correct: Check the Opening Balance transactions to see if the dollar amounts have been changed. Correct the transaction dollar amounts if needed.
    7. If the account balances still are not correct: Scroll back through the register looking for duplicate transactions. It should be very easy to identify what the newly downloaded duplicates are because they will be marked as Cleared whereas all of the previous transactions will be marked as Reconciled. NOTE: Having a "C" in the transaction does not automatically mean it is a duplicate. It simply means that if you see two transactions that look the same but one is marked "R" and the other is marked "C" it will be the one marked "C" that is the duplicate. If you find any duplicates, delete one of them and retain the other. Typically, any duplicates will be found within the last 90 days (or less).

At this point your accounts should be in balance.
